Top Somerset County basketball, rifle, swimming and wrestling performers for Jan. 6-12

Athlete of the Week

North Star girls basketball player Abby Barnick was voted Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while Berlin Brothersvalley rifle team member Dalton Maust was selected Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts Jan. 2-6.

In two wins, Barnick combined for 33 points.

Meanwhile, in two rifle matches, Maust fired a personal best 269 and a 265.

Thursday

Boys basketball

Conemaugh Township 58, Blacklick Valley 29: In Davidsville, Jon Updyke tallied a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds to lead Conemaugh Township past Blacklick Valley.

Alex Gregory recorded 12 points, and Tanner Shirley added 11 points and seven assists for Conemaugh Township.

North Star 59, Shanksville-Stonycreek 34: In Boswell, four Cougars scored in double figures in a triumph over the Vikings.

CJ Biery paced North Star with 14 points. Ethan Smith had 13 points, Brady Weimer contributed 12 and Andy Retassie chipped in 10.

Christian Musser and Logan McCall each had 10 points for Shanksville.

Rockwood 83, Salisbury-Elk Lick 42: In Rockwood, Will Latuch poured in a game-high 33 points as the Rockets trounced the Elks.

Josiah Rock netted 22 points and Dalton Boden added 15 points for Rockwood.

Lance Jones dropped 25 points for Salisbury.

Rifle

Bishop Carroll 1,302, North Star 1,290: The Cougars suffered their first setback of the season to the Huskies.

Nicole Rininger led North Star with a 271. Aidan Barnick shot a 261 and Cody Snoeberger fired a 257.

Wrestling

Somerset 45, Bedford 16: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles rolled past the Bisons.

Garrett Marsh, Rowan Holmes, Ali Akanan, Michael Bridge, DeShonn Valentine, Austin Dewitt and Logan Baker all picked up victories by fall for Somerset. Zane Hagans won by a 6-1 decision.

Wednesday

Boys basketball

Turkeyfoot 70, Union 38: In Confluence, Chris Kozlowski delivered 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Rams throttled the Tigers.

Bryce Nicholson tallied 16 points for Turkeyfoot. Colt Rugg contributed 14 points, and Bryce Schmidt added 10 points.

Penn Cambria 94, Somerset 54: In Cresson, the Golden Eagles were pummeled by the Panthers.

Somerset's Aiden VanLenten scored 13 points while Eli Mumau and Caleb Platt each had 10 points.

Girls basketball

Conemaugh Township 36, Blacklick Valley 32: In Davidsville, Madee Roman scored a team-high nine points and pulled down six rebounds as Conemaugh Township edged Blacklick Valley.

Jenna Brenneman recorded eight points and seven rebounds for Conemaugh Township. Ava Byer grabbed 10 rebounds, and Ashlyn Fetterman had six steals.

Berlin Brothersvalley 52, Meyersdale 39: In Meyersdale, Jenny Countryman poured in a game-high 21 points to lift the Mountaineers past the Red Raiders.

Meyersdale's Zoe Hetz netted 16 points and Amelia Kretchman added 14.

Penn Cambria 50, Somerset 36: The Golden Eagles suffered an LHAC setback to the visiting Panthers.

Eve Housley tallied 14 points for Somerset. Gracie Bowers and Mia Rosman each had seven points.

Windber 53, Shade 37: In Windber, Harmony Jablon scored a team-high 17 points as the Ramblers upended the Panthers.

Lexie James contributed 13 points, and Rylee Ott added eight points, 12 rebounds and four steals for Windber.

Jenna Muha recorded 24 points and 17 rebounds for Shade.

North Star 51, Ligonier Valley 22: In Boswell, Grace Metz produced 19 points and four assists as the Cougars topped the Rams.

Chloe Miller recorded a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds for North Star.

Union 59, Turkeyfoot 41: In Confluence, the Rams dropped a non-conference tilt to the Tigers.

Ava Hair finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds for Turkeyfoot.

Rifle

North Star 1,313, Meyersdale 1,254: Nicole Rininger fired a 269 to lift the Cougars past the Red Raiders.

Hayden Kobuck (267) and Kaylee Lepley (266) each shot a personal best for North Star.

Emilee Stewart (262), Kyle Smith (261) and Matthew Diehl (249) all shot a personal best for Meyersdale.

Everett 1,380, Conemaugh Township 1,347: Everett handed Conemaugh Township its first setback of the season.

Sierra LaPorta led Conemaugh Township with a 276. Nathaniel Denault (269) and Mea Rouser (261) each shot a personal best.

Swimming

Somerset splits with Tyrone: In Tyrone, the Somerset girls picked up a 125-31 victory while the boys fell 79-69 to Tyrone.

Carly Richard (200 free, 500 free), Alyssa Richard (200 IM, 100 fly), Hope Miller (50 free, 100 back), Lydia Sheeler (100 free), and Isabella Basala (100 breast) all picked up individual wins for the Somerset girls.

Emert Rugg (200 IM, 100 fly) and Simon McGuire (50 free, 100 free) earned individual wins for the Somerset boys.

Tuesday

Boys basketball

Shanksville-Stonycreek 60, Meyersdale 46: In Shanksville, Logan McCall poured in a game-high 29 points to vault the Vikings past the Red Raiders.

Christian Musser contributed 17 points for Shanksville.

Malachi Carr scored 14 points and Lance Aldinger added 11 points for Meyersdale.

Windber 65, North Star 49: In Windber, John Shuster was perfect from the field, scoring 23 points to lead the Ramblers past the Cougars.

Grady Klosky tallied 18 points and Blake Klosky added 11 for Windber.

Brady Weimer paced North Star with 16 points. Ethan Smith contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Girls basketball

Penns Manor 60, North Star 24: In Boswell, the Cougars suffered a non-conference setback to the Comets.

Grace Metz and Chloe Miller each scored seven points for North Star.

Rifle

Shanksville-Stonycreek 1,113, Salisbury-Elk Lick 877: Owen Boozer shot a personal best 241 to propel the Vikings past the Elks.

Jeremiah Swallow (221), Kyleia Lasure (214) and Maggie Weaver (213) all shot personal bests for Shanksville.

Nolan Easton led Salisbury with a 248.

Conemaugh Township 1,338, Forest Hills 1,286: Sierra LaPorta shot a 278 to guide Conemaugh Township past Forest Hills.

Noah Lehman recorded a 273 and Lydia Boring fired a 265 for Conemaugh Township.

Wrestling

Ligonier Valley 36, Conemaugh Township 30: In Davidsville, Conemaugh Township dropped a tight match to Ligonier Valley.

Tristen Hawkins, Ryan Thomas, Colten Huffman, Ryan Krassnoski and Alexander Roles picked up falls for Conemaugh Township.

Bishop Carroll 54, Somerset 50: In Ebensburg, the Golden Eagles were edged by the Huskies.

Caleb Platt led Somerset with 16 points while Eli Mumau added 12 points.

Meyersdale 49, Blacklick Valley 38: In Meyersdale, Malachi Carr delivered 22 points as the Red Raiders bested the Vikings.

Lance Aldinger scored 10 points for Meyersdale.

Northern Garrett 72, Rockwood 54: In Rockwood, the Rockets suffered a non-conference setback to the Huskies.

Will Latuch recorded 24 points, including five 3-pointers, and Christian Schrock chipped in 12 points for Rockwood.

Conemaugh Valley 71, Shanksville-Stonycreek 58: In Shanksville, Jeremy Dietz dropped 29 points to lift the Blue Jays past the Vikings.

Shanksville's Christian Musser poured in a game-high 32 points and Logan McCall chipped in 17 points.

Berlin Brothersvalley 73, Greensburg Central Catholic 53: In Berlin, Pace Prosser poured in 30 points to guide the Mountaineers past the Centurions.

Craig Jarvis added 19 points and Ryan Blubaugh provided 18 for Berlin.

Girls basketball

Greensburg Central Catholic 59, Berlin Brothersvalley 37: In Berlin, the Mountaineers dropped a non-conference setback to the Centurions.

Grace Sechler paced Berlin with 14 points.

Bishop Carroll 71, Somerset 48: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles were romped by the Huskies.

Eve Housley dropped 15 points for Somerset.

Shade 70, Turkeyfoot 48: In Confluence, Jenna Muha delivered 41 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals as the Panthers pummeled the Rams.

Hailee Chapman tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals for Shade.

Maleigha Younkin paced Turkeyfoot with 14 points and Ava Hair added 11 points.

Windber 61, North Star 33: In Windber, Lexie James scored a game-high 15 points to propel the Ramblers past the Cougars.

Shannon Tokarsky dropped 12 points and Rylee Ott chipped in 11 points for Windber.

Grace Metz and Abby Barnick led North Star with 10 points each.

Rifle

Somerset 1,300, Portage 1,247: Maddison Allen shot a personal best 280 to lead the Golden Eagles past the Mustangs.

Kiersten Allen fired a 270 for Somerset. Jared Walker (248) and Shawn Shaffer (242) each shot personal bests.

Swimming

Somerset swept by Huntingdon: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles were swept by the Bearcats.

The Somerset girls fell 100-69, and the boys were downed 114-54.

Alyssa Richard (200 IM) and Hope Miller (50 free and 100 free) picked up individual victories for the Somerset girls.

Zach Gibbs (100 breaststroke) was the lone winner for the Somerset boys.

Boys basketball

Turkeyfoot 48, Meyersdale 31: In Meyersdale, Bryce Schmidt produced 13 points as the Rams bested the Red Raiders.

Turkeyfoot's Chris Kozlowski delivered 12 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Bryce Nicholson added 11 points and eight steals.

Braden Kretchman led Meyersdale with 13 points.

North Star 60, Conemaugh Valley 50: In Boswell, Brady Weimer recorded 20 points and six rebounds as the Cougars upended the Blue Jays.

CJ Biery scored 19 points for North Star. Ethan Smith contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Central Cambria 80, Somerset 57: In Somerset, Hunter Pittsinger netted 21 points as the Red Devils bested the Golden Eagles.

Aiden VanLenten led Somerset with 14 points. Caleb Platt tallied 12 points and Eli Mumau chipped in 11 points.

Girls basketball

Somerset 48, Central Cambria 43: In Ebensburg, Shawna Walker netted a game-high 19 points to propel the Golden Eagles past the Red Devils.

Kamryn Ross scored 10 points and Eve Housley added nine for Somerset.
