Top Somerset County basketball, rifle, swimming and wrestling performers for Jan. 20-26

Athlete of the Week

Rockwood basketball player Mollie Wheatley was selected Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while Conemaugh Township rifle team member Noah Lehman was voted Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts Jan. 16-20.

In three games, Wheatley combined for 50 points, including 22 in a win at Turkeyfoot.

Meanwhile, in two rifle victories, Lehman shot a 272, and a personal best 281, including a perfect 100 in the prone position in a win over Salisbury-Elk Lick.

Thursday

Boys basketball

Turkeyfoot 56, Shanksville-Stonycreek 52: In Shanksville, Chris Kozlowski provided 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Rams edged the Vikings.

Bryce Nicholson tallied 19 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and six steals for Turkeyfoot.

Christian Musser scored a game-high 24 points for Shanksville. Logan McCall added 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Windber 63, Blacklick Valley 25: In Nanty Glo, Grady Klosky dropped 18 points to propel the Ramblers past the Vikings.

Evan Brady recorded 16 points, and John Shuster added 10 points for Windber.

North Star 75, Northern Bedford 68: Ethan Smith delivered 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds as the Cougars topped the Panthers.

Mitchel Pristas tallied 18 points and six rebounds for North Star. Brady Weimer added 12 points and CJ Biery contributed 11 points.

Girls basketball

Conemaugh Township 65, Conemaugh Valley 16: In Davidsville, Mya Poznanski scored a game-high 16 points in Conemaugh Township's throttling of Conemaugh Valley.

Jenna Brenneman had 14 points and nine rebounds for Conemaugh Township. Ava Byer grabbed nine rebounds and Madee Roman had eight boards.

Berlin Brothersvalley 43, Mountain Ridge 32: In Berlin, Jenny Countryman netted a game-high 16 points to lead the Mountaineers to a non-conference victory.

Grace Sechler tallied 12 points for Berlin.

North Star 45, Ferndale 33: In Johnstown, Grace Metz contributed 19 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to propel the Cougars past the Yellow Jackets.

Chloe Miller recorded 10 points and a whopping 20 rebounds for North Star.

Meyersdale, 57, Rockwood 31: In Meyersdale, Zoe Hetz delivered a game-high 22 points as the Red Raiders rolled past over the Rockets.

Maci Moore scored 11 points for Meyersdale.

Mollie Wheatley led Rockwood with 12 points.

Shade 58, Blacklick Valley 54: In Cairnbrook, Jenna Muha poured in 43 points, surpassing 2,000 for her career, leading the Panthers over the Vikings.

Muha also pulled down 19 rebounds.

Wrestling

Forest Hills 39, Somerset 32: In Sidman, the Golden Eagles dropped a narrow setback to the Rangers.

Deshonn Valentine and Rowan Holmes each won by major decision for Somerset. Toby Walker, Wes Shaulis and Zane Hagans won by fall.

Tuesday

Boys basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 70, Allegany 68: The Mountaineers outscored the Campers 47-33 in the second half to earn a narrow victory in Maryland.

Pace Prosser recorded a game-high 32 points, including four 3-pointers for Berlin. Craig Jarvis tallied 21 points, including five treys, and Ryan Blubaugh added 14 points.

Girls basketball

Windber 44, Blacklick Valley 29: In Nanty Glo, Kaylie Gaye paced the Ramblers with 14 points in a victory over the Vikings.

Rylee Ott tallied 12 points and nine rebounds, and Lexie James added 12 points for Windber.

Conemaugh Township 44, Ferndale 31: In Johnstown, Mya Poznanski recorded 21 points and six steals to lead Conemaugh Township past Ferndale.

Ava Byer contributed nine points and nine rebounds, and Jenna Brenneman grabbed nine boards for Conemaugh Township.

Meyersdale 66, Northern Garrett 59 (OT): Laurel Daniels produced a team-high 17 points to propel the Red Raiders to a non-conference victory on the road.

Zoe Hetz tallied 15 points, and Maci Moore added 10 points for Meyersdale.

Rifle

Conemaugh Township 1,315, Berlin Brothersvalley 1,180: Sierra LaPorta fired a 273 to lead Conemaugh Township past Berlin.

Noah Lehman (272) and Lydia Boring (266) rounded out the top three for Conemaugh Township.

Dalton Maust paced Berlin with a 254.

Wrestling

Berlin Brothersvalley 51, North Star 15: In Boswell, the Mountaineers rolled past the Cougars.

Logan Webreck won by a 5-1 decision, and Braden Durst picked up a fall for Berlin.

North Star's Braden Livingston won by a 4-0 decision.

Somerset 37, Penn Cambria 36: In Cresson, the Golden Eagles topped the Panthers via tiebreaker.

Rowan Holmes, Deshonn Valentine, Austin Dewitt, Toby Walker and Logan Baker picked up falls for Somerset. Zane Hagans won by a 1-0 decision, and Ali Akanan won by a 6-4 decision.

United 62, Conemaugh Township 6: In Davidsville, the Lions captured a commanding victory.

Tristen Hawkins won by a 7-3 decision, and Ryan Thomas picked up a 7-4 decision for Conemaugh Township's lone wins.

Boys basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 67, Homer-Center 39: In Berlin, Craig Jarvis went off for 27 points, including seven 3-pointers as the Mountaineers soared past the Wildcats.

Pace Prosser scored 19 points, and Ryan Blubaugh contributed 12 points for Berlin.

North Star 54, Blacklick Valley 45: In Boswell, Brady Weimer poured in 26 points as the Cougars bested the Vikings.

CJ Biery scored 15 points, and Andy Retassie tallied seven points and seven rebounds for North Star.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 48, Salisbury-Elk Lick 33: In Shanksville, Layne Mincek scored 15 points to send the Vikings past the Elks.

Christian Musser tallied 14 points, and Logan McCall added 10 for Shanksville.

Lance Jones netted 14 points for Salisbury.

Turkeyfoot 67, Rockwood 65: In Confluence, Bryce Nicholson dropped 30 points and swiped nine steals as the Rams edged the Rockets.

Chris Kozlowski recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Zack Ryan added 10 points for Turkeyfoot.

Josiah Rock netted 17 points for Rockwood. Christian Schrock and Dalton Boden each scored 15 points, and Will Latuch chipped in 12 points.

Windber 66, Conemaugh Valley 40: In Windber, John Shuster went 12 of 13 from the field, recording a game-high 25 points to propel the Ramblers past the Blue Jays.

Grady Klosky provided 17 points, 10 steals and seven rebounds while Evan Brady added 12 points for Windber.

United 56, Conemaugh Township 54: In Armagh, Conemaugh Township was clipped by United.

Tanner Shirley tallied 22 points, and Jon Updyke added 16 points for Conemaugh Township.

Girls basketball

Homer-Center 60, Berlin Brothersvalley 49: In Berlin, Grace Sechler scored a game-high 26 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career in a non-conference setback to the Wildcats.

Windber 49, Meyersdale 24: In Meyersdale, Lexie James delivered 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven steals as the Ramblers romped the Red Raiders.

Kaylie Gaye tallied 11 points for Windber.

Amelia Kretchman scored 10 points for Meyersdale.

North Star 56, Northern Cambria 38: In Northern Cambria, Grace Metz tallied 19 points and five steals to lead the Cougars past the Colts.

Abby Barnick scored 16 points, and Chloe Miller produced 15 points and 12 rebounds for North Star.

Rifle

Bishop Carroll 1,280, Meyersdale 1,250: Red Raider teammates Jacob Hetz (252), Jaylynn Anderson (249), Tiani Christner (245) and Bryson Hetz (245) all shot personal bests in a setback to the Huskies.

Boys basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 75, Conemaugh Township 51: In Berlin, Pace Prosser went off for 31 points, including five 3-pointers to guide the Mountaineers to a victory.

Craig Jarvis scored 20 points, and Ryan Blubaugh chipped in 13 for Berlin.

Tanner Shirley and Colin Dinyar each recorded 12 points for Conemaugh Township. Alex Gregory scored 11 points and Jon Updyke tallied 10.

Girls basketball

Blacklick Valley 54, North Star 42: In Boswell, North Star's Grace Metz recorded 18 points in a setback to Blacklick Valley.

Berlin Brothersvalley 69, Shade 12: In Cairnbrook, Grace Sechler poured in 22 points to lead the Mountaineers past the Panthers.

Ashley Brant netted 11 points, and Taylor Hillegass added nine for Berlin.

Somerset 60, Central 57: In Somerset, Eve Housley netted a team-high 18 points as the Golden Eagles edged the Dragons.

Shawna Walker dropped 17 points, and Emily Rush added 10 for Somerset.

Windber 63, Conemaugh Valley 27: In Windber, Lexie James recorded a game-high 18 points to guide the Ramblers past the Blue Jays.

Kaylie Gaye provided nine points, and Sam Horner grabbed eight rebounds for Windber.

Rockwood 41, Turkeyfoot 37: In Confluence, Mollie Wheatley netted a game-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five steals, leading the Rockets past the Rams.

Shyanne Schur scored 13 points for Turkeyfoot. Maleigha Younkin added 12 points and Ava Hair chipped in 10.
