Top Stories of 2022: No. 10 - Customers flock to new T.J. Maxx near Pottsville on opening day

Dec. 30—Hundreds of visitors flocked to Fairlane Village mall on Oct. 16 for the grand opening of the first-ever T.J. Maxx store in Schuylkill County.

Located at the former site of Brother's Buffet in the mall near Pottsville, the store was abuzz with excitement on opening day, with customers shopping for housewares, clothing and other items at the off-price retailer.

Many of the shoppers, who came from all over Schuylkill County, had visited other T.J. Maxx locations before.

Alec Gonzalez, of Pottsville, said he could not pass up the opportunity to attend the store's opening day.

"I love T.J. Maxx," he said. "They seem to be running it really well, with how many people are here."

Construction crews had begun to work on the store in January and had planned to open it in the summer.

However, supply chain problems and workers' vacations delayed the opening, according to Rocco Arruzzo, regional manager for Lexington Realty, the mall's owner.

Since its opening, the T.J. Maxx store has drawn a dedicated base of customers to the mall.

Arruzzo said sales have been "fine," as expected.

"People are excited it's there," he said. "They've shopped, and we have nothing but positive responses from them. It drew a lot of attention to the area and to the mall."

Founded in 1976, T.J. Maxx is based in Framingham, Massachusetts. It is an off-price retailer, known for selling men's, women's and children's clothing, along with shoes, toys, beauty accessories, furniture and kitchen utensils.

"We're excited to offer local shoppers great values on high quality, brand-name merchandise, and we're grateful for our customers in the Pottsville community," said Katie MacLeod, a spokeswoman for the company.

Customers crowded every part of the store on Oct. 16 to shop for the wares, while store associates were on hand to assist shoppers and keep things running smoothly. Many customers received free reusable bags upon checkout.

"It's nice to have one here," said Deb Schreffler, of New Philadelphia. "They always have really nice things."
