As 2023 comes to a close, the News-Messenger and News Herald have been counting down the Top 10 local stories of the year, based on readers' interest and staff input. Today we continue the countdown with a look at story numbers 6 and 5 of 2023.

No. 6: 'Good Morning America' visiting Put-in-Bay

PUT-IN-BAY - Our preview about "Good Morning America" coming to Put-in-Bay and South Bass Island on the week of July 9 was incredibly popular. The purpose was to tell the nation all about the popular island tourist attraction.

The television show did show up and air the program.

According to the Put-in-Bay's chamber of commerce, the national news program was to share what an Every Day Island Getaway to the island is all about. The theme of the segment featuring Put-in-Bay will be Diving into Summer featuring island life and being on the water.

The segment did highlight some iconic stories, businesses and things to do, eat and enjoy while living or visiting the island. The segment did broadcast on July 13, at South Bass Island State Park.

No. 5: Pedestrian dies after being hit by car on US 20

YORK TOWNSHIP - A 32-year-old Clyde man who was walking in the left lane of U.S. 20 died after being struck by a car late March 20, the Ohio Highway Patrol reported.

Cory Corbin was pronounced dead at the scene by Sandusky County EMS personnel after being hit by a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by Nathan Longbrake, 31, of Clyde at 11:25 p.m., the patrol said Tuesday in a news release.

Longbrake was driving westbound on U.S. 20 near mile post 29 east of Clyde in York Township, Sandusky County, when he struck the pedestrian, the patrol said. The reason why Corbin was in the roadway is unknown at this time and is still under investigation, the patrol said in the news release.

Alcohol and/or drug impairment was not a factor for the driver, the patrol said.

The highway patrol was assisted at the scene by Sandusky County EMS, Sandusky County Sheriff's Office, Clyde Police Department, and Lucky Towing.

Monday's fatality was the second on U.S. 20 in Sandusky County in three days. Donald Eckel, 74, of Pemberville, died Friday morning when his Toyota Camry hit a semitrailer that was pulling out of a gas station onto U.S. 20 in Green Creek Township.
