Top stories: housing, traffic, and bullying

As we head into the week, let's take a look at the news from this past week.

For the first time in nearly a decade, New Bedford High will be represented at a National track and field meet. The Whalers’ 4x100 relay team of seniors Jahzed Valls, Kevin Ayala, and Jose Diaz and junior Edenilson Semedo qualified for the Adidas National Championship Meet in Greensboro, NC during the MIAA Div. 1 meet with a time of 43.72, the sixth fastest in school history.

Bernadette Peters is returning once again to The Zeiterion on June 29, for a special performance that partly pays homage to her late friend and composer Stephen Sondheim. The three-time Tony Award winner, who last visited New Bedford in 2019, is known best for originating the role of Dot in “Sunday in the Park with George” and starring as Annie in the well-reviewed revival of “Annie Get Your Gun.”

It won’t be long before the new pedestrian bridge across Route 18 and Acushnet Avenue that will connect the downtown to the New Bedford Station as part of the South Coast Rail project begins to take shape.

There will be traffic impacts related to this construction. Lane shifts will be necessary, especially in the Sea Streak parking lot area. The construction activity may also impact people taking the ferry or visiting waterfront amenities in New Bedford this summer and fall.

There will also be limited lane or street closures along Route 18 and Acushnet Avenue overnight with detour signs directing drivers around the area.

A video shows a New Bedford student getting bullied on a school bus. DCF is investigating

The 28-second video starts with an obviously older boy slapping a seated boy on a school bus that's apparently in motion. The older boy's first slap snaps the younger boy's head sideways. He takes a furtive look toward the front of the bus as if to check if his actions are being noticed, then he slaps the younger boy again, harder this time.

They both attend Alma del Mar Charter School's Frederick Douglass Campus. School Executive Director Taylor DeLoach issued a communication to parents that was posted on the school's website. It stated the "deeply disturbing incident" was under investigation and disciplinary action would be taken against any students who had taken a role in it.

Southeast Housing Court at 139 Hathaway Road has a district that includes New Bedford, Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Freetown, and Westport, and the court is open Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. All of the state's Housing Court divisions travel within their districts to hold sessions every week.

The Southeast Division's court personnel travel to hold sessions in Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Plymouth, and Barnstable.

The court's mission "is to adjudicate all matters presented by litigants within its jurisdiction regarding housing in a fair, efficient, and timely manner according to the rule of law and the facts presented," states Jennifer Donahue, Mass. Trial Court spokesperson.

Mediation is a free, voluntary, and confidential process, Donahue said. It gives the parties the ability to make a decision about the resolution of their case. If mediation fails, the case can proceed to trial.
