Top stories: Strand Theatre renovation, new AD at Stang, shooting investigation

As we head into the week, let's take a look at the news from this past week.

Mayor Jon Mitchell's Administration "remains unwavering in its support" of South Coast Rail's two new pending city stations. But according to Solicitor Eric Jaikes, that doesn't mean New Bedford can't seek more money from the MTBA  for land taken for the project. Threatening a lawsuit against the MBTA is "unnecessarily risky," "perplexing," and "concerning" to three state legislators.

Co-owners of Behavioral Connections on MacArthur Drive are finally ready to open a coffee shop in June on the first floor of their building.  Ground Floor Coffee hopes to provide job skills to individuals with disabilities and give them a chance to train and learn under their supervision. It will be an upscale coffee shop where they will roast coffee in the roaster in-house as well as offer a cook-to-order kitchen for takeaway food.

The transformation of the historic Strand Theatre into a cultural center honoring the Cape Verdean residents of the city will be a celebration of the arts and the city's diverse cultures.

Since 1990, the nonprofit Cape Verdean Association in New Bedford (CVANB) started by first-generation immigrants has been interested in transforming the original Vien’s Theatre into an arts, culture and humanities center for the celebration of Cape Verdean history, heritage and culture.

In time, the Cape Verdean Cultural Center will be filled with the sights and sounds of live concerts and performing arts events and other programs. The Cultural Center will focus on cultural education, immigration services, and translation, economic development services and programs for all ages and backgrounds, and moving programs that are being offered off-site into new classroom space.

Quintal said he was left owed $8,000 in back rent, and stuck paying another $8,000 in property repairs. He also paid legal fees and moving fees to re-take possession of the apartment.

In January 2022 Mark A. Quintal's tenants began having trouble paying the rent. He ended up having to hire an attorney and go through the eviction process through Housing Court, which he said was "excruciating." And it took over seven months.

The trial was held and the judge ruled in his favor, and the tenants were given 10 days to vacate or make an appeal, he said. The tenants didn't file an appeal or leave, he said. The constable informed Quintal he would have to hire a mover to move their stuff out and put it in storage. That cost $2,200, including $600 for three months of storage.
