McDonald’s All-American Mackenzie Mgbako, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound senior forward from Roselle (New Jersey) Catholic High School, will reveal his college choice on Friday at a yet-to-be determined time, recruiting writer Andrew Slater reported Wednesday.

Mgbako on Wednesday narrowed his list of four schools to Kansas and Indiana. He eliminated St. John’s and Louisville.

Once committed to Duke, Mgbako asked out of his national letter-of-intent on April 11. He’s ranked No. 8 in the Class of 2023 by Rivals.com, No. 9 by ESPN.com and No. 10 by 247sports.com.

Of Mgbako, On3.com’s Jamie Shaw wrote: “It is all about the jump shot. The release is consistent, high, and soft. Mgbako steps into it confidently off the catch and his balance is right on. Then you see the positional size at 6-8/6-9 and you see the attraction. Mgbako attacks closeouts in a straight line. His handle is average, his hips seem a little stiff, and he is a slightly above average athlete. Despite each of these being a concern moving forward, the shooting and the confidence are very real traits here and he rebounds his area. Mgbako has consistently performed at a high level in big settings.”

KU and Indiana, by the way, will play a nonconference game next season in Bloomington, Indiana.

Ejiofor contacted by Kentucky

Former KU forward Zuby Ejiofor will visit Villanova on Thursday through Saturday; St. John’s May 13-15, TCU on May 27 and San Diego State May 28-30, Zagsblog.com reported.

Ejiofor’s mentor, Andy Philachack, confirmed to The Star the Zagsblog.com report that Kentucky is one of the 30-plus schools to have contacted Ejiofor. Philachack said Ejiofor would only consider UK if big man Oscar Tshiebwe remains in the NBA Draft.

Ejiofor, a 6-9, 240-pound sophomore-to-be from Garland, Texas, entered the transfer portal last week after 7-footer Hunter Dickinson announced his decision to transfer from Michigan to KU.

Roos’ Mitchell to Penn State

Former Kansas City guard RayQuawndis Mitchell will transfer to Penn State for his final season of college basketball, he announced Wednesday on Twitter.

Mitchell, 6-5 ,200 from Blaine, Minnesota, averaged 17.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game this past season earning second-team all-Summit League honors for the Roos.

He’s also played at Idaho and Illinois-Chicago.

Mitchell also considered Oklahoma State, BYU and Arkansas. He’s the seventh portal addition at Penn State this offseason.

“It seemed like the right fit at the perfect time,” Mitchell told the Centre Daily Times. “They’re coming after me pretty hard, Coach (Mike) Rhoades and the rest of the staff. It seems like the more and more relationships I built with them, it seemed like I’d known them longer and longer. It’s that family part, honestly.”

“We are really excited to have RayQ in our family here at Penn State,” Rhoades said in a release. “He brings us experience and ability that is needed on the perimeter. RayQ fits our style of play and our approach.”

Kaluma, Phillips in portal

Top players continue to pour into the NCAA transfer portal. Creighton’s Arthur Kaluma, 6-7, 225 junior-to-be out of Dream City Christian High in Glendale, Arizona and Tennessee’s Julian Phillips, 6-8, 200 sophomore-to-be from Link Academy in Missouri, entered the portal on Wednesday, according to published reports.

Kaluma averaged 11.8 points and 6.0 boards last season; Phillips 8.3 points and 4.7 boards. Phillps was the No. 14-rated player in the recruiting Class of 2022 according to Rivals.com. Kaluma has also entered his name in the 2023 NBA Draft pool.

West Virginia has five portal additions

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, who was suspended by school administration three games and had his salary reduced by $1 million for the upcoming season Wednesday, had been enjoying one of the best offseasons of his career prior to Tuesday’s appearance on a Cincinnati radio station in which he uttered an anti-gay slur.

The Hall of Fame coach has signed the top group of transfers in the country, according to 247sports.com.

The Mountaineers have signed five portal players: Jesse Edwards (Syracuse, ranked No. 4 overall by 247sports.com), RaeQuan Battle (Montana State, ranked 27), Kerr Kriisa (Arizona, 42), plus unranked Jose Perez and Omar Silverio (Manhattan).

KU, which has the second rated transfer class according to 247sports.com, has landed Hunter Dickinson (No. 1 overall, Michigan), Nick Timberlake (Towson, No. 25) and Arterio Morris (Texas, No. 28) from the portal.
