There are a million products out there promising you a better night's rest, but weighted blankets actually have research backing up their claims. They were first introduced by occupational therapists as a treatment for behavioral disorders but are now more mainstream for anyone who wants to relax. Experts refer to it as "deep-pressure therapy:" The idea is that the pressure from the blanket can increase serotonin, a chemical in the body that makes you feel happy and calm. It's not intended to cure any medical conditions, but it's become a popular way for insomniacs, people dealing with anxiety and self-proclaimed "bad sleepers" to get some shut-eye.

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute review bedding and sleep-improvement products on a regular basis. To find the best weighted blankets, the fiber scientists in the Textiles Lab consider the materials used and the care instructions for each blanket and rate each blanket's construction to ensure the filling doesn't clump to one side, since weighted blankets are usually filled with tiny glass or plastic beads to provide pressure. We also sent weighted blankets home with real consumer testers to try them out for additional feedback, and interviewed Christine Rocchio Mueller, an occupational therapist at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, on the best practices around using weighted blankets.

Our top picks:

"Gravity blanket" is often synonymous with a weighted blanket, since the brand's Kickstarter campaign went viral years ago and made the category more mainstream. It has everything you need for a good weighted blanket: grid-like stitching to help keep the glass beads inside the blanket in place, a cozy microfleece cover that's machine washable and secure buttons and ties to make sure the blanket stays put in the cover. Note that some testers found it sleeps hot, and it comes in just one size for individual use.

If the hefty price tag attached to most weighted blankets is a turnoff, consider Tranquility's option, which is a fraction of the cost yet still has high-quality features. It's filled with glass beads, and testers loved that they stayed cool while using the blanket. One tester raved, "It helped alleviate my anxiety," and another said, "It just looked like a normal throw!" And though most of the less expensive weighted blankets don't come with a washable cover (you have to buy them separately), Tranquility's removable cover can be cleaned in the washing machine. Some testers did note some twisting and clumping of the fill after extensive use.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fbearaby.com%2Fproducts%2Fthe-napper&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.goodhousekeeping.com%2Fhome-products%2Fblanket-reviews%2Fa24734005%2Fbest-weighted-blankets%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Shop Now</a></p><p>Cotton Napper</p><p>$199.00</p><p>bearaby.com</p><span class="copyright">Bearaby</span>

Most weighted blankets use synthetic fabrics, but this stylish knit throw from Bearaby uses organic cotton fabric instead of a beaded fill. Note, though, that because of its open structure, you feel more evenly distributed weight when you layer it over another blanket. Testers were very enthusiastic about its "stylish appearance" and "soft, cozy feel," giving it top marks for comfort. Good Housekeeping Institute analysts love that this blanket is entirely machine washable, but note that it does take longer to dry.

This blanket is an Amazon best seller, with more than 45,000 reviews from users who say it feels incredible to sleep under. It features a machine washable cover with a cotton and polyester side for the best of both worlds. Some online reviewers did note that the fill shifted a bit during use. However, it stands out in particular for having so many options to choose from, whether you want to use it at bedtime or as a throw blanket for naps. There are five sizes, seven colors and eight weights ranging from five to 30 pounds.

Avoid a bulky-looking weighted blanket by opting for a chic knit version, like this style from Nuzzie. Testers raved about how much they preferred this weighted blanket over others they've tried, saying, "The Nuzzie weighted blanket is different in a good way, as the weight of the blanket is equally distributed, applies even pressure, and I felt comfortable." GH Institute analysts appreciate this blanket's "smooth, T-shirt-like feel," which gives it a soothing effect. Because of its knit design, Good Housekeeping Institute bedding experts recommend layering it over another blanket.

Layla

Unlike most options that seem the same, Layla's weighted blanket is more unique thanks to its innovative features, like its reversible design. One side has a cotton fabric that feels like a traditional bedsheet, and the other side is a cozy fleece that feels more like a throw blanket. And although most weighted blankets come with a cover because they're not washable, this entire blanket can be machine washed (just make sure the machine can handle a heavy load). Layla also offers a free 120-night return period, so you can get your money back even if you've used it but don't love it.

Another option from Brooklinen, this weighted throw impressed GH Institute analysts in recent testing because it's entirely machine washable and has an elevated appearance compared with other weighted blankets we've tested, with its textured top design. Testers unanimously agreed that this blanket was comfortable and that the fill stayed even throughout use. One said, "It induced sleep, and I slept straight through the night," and another noted, "It's more functional than the knit/open-structure ones, as it worked well to apply even pressure."

How we test weighted blankets

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab tests all types of bedding — including sheets, pillows, comforters and blankets — in the Lab using specialized equipment. We also send products to hundreds of at-home testers. To evaluate weighted blankets, our GH Institute analysts consider the materials used, weight distribution (so the beads don’t just clump to each side), innovative features and ease of laundering. Testers use the blankets at home to give feedback on softness, comfort when using, laundering, temperature regulation and more. In our latest blanket testing, GH Institute pros tested more than 30 blankets, including nearly a dozen different weighted blankets, before making these picks.

Do weighted blankets really work?

Yes; experts report there are real benefits to using a weighted blanket. "There is recent research suggesting they can help reduce or relieve anxiety," says Rocchio Mueller. She also says they can help people who may not consider themselves anxious, yet still experience insomnia or sleep disturbances: "A weighted blanket might provide just enough physiological calm that it helps them relax to fall asleep." Many users describe the sensation of lying under a weighted blanket as feeling like a hug.

"It is one of the most natural things to reach and hug a family member or friend when they are upset or anxious," according to Rocchio Mueller. "While a hug might not solve all your problems, it often helps you feel better by calming your body, which then allows you to think a little bit clearer."

What to look for when shopping for the best weighted blanket

These are the most important details to consider when choosing the right blanket for you:

✔️ Outer material: Because the outer material is what you'll feel on your skin, it's important that you like the fabric's feel. Polyester fleece is a popular option for the outer cover, as it's soft and cozy, but some brands use cotton for a more natural feel.

✔️ Filling: Weighted blankets are usually filled with tiny glass or plastic beads to provide pressure. Glass beads are the most popular filling because they're denser than plastic. GH Institute analysts recommend looking for grid-like stitching that helps keep the fill evenly distributed. Some weighted blankets use cotton or down alternative polyester filling too, especially knit designs.

✔️ Size: Avoid oversize options. The blanket shouldn't hang off the side of your bed: The weight can make it fall off during the night. Also, a larger size means the weight is more spread out, so you'll feel less pressure. Even if you have a larger bed, you may want to use a twin- or individual-size weighted blanket.

✔️ Laundering instructions: Check the care label to ensure you'll be able to keep it clean easily. Some weighted blankets are spot-clean only, but many feature a removable, machine washable cover. A few styles are even entirely machine washable. GH Institute pros note that it usually takes weighted blankets longer to dry after washing.

A note of caution: Weighted blankets shouldn’t be used by anyone who can’t move freely beneath the weight. Even though they're sometimes used as a therapeutic tool for children, it's important to speak with a child's pediatrician first, before trying it out.

How heavy should a weighted blanket be?

For adults, the blankets themselves are heavy, but not so heavy that you’ll feel like you’re being crushed underneath them. To find the best weight for you, you'll need to do some basic math. Most manufacturers recommend choosing a weighted blanket that's roughly 10% of your body weight. So if you weigh around 150 pounds, a 15-pound blanket is ideal. Don't worry about hitting the exact number; within the 7% to 12% range is considered good.
