Top track and field times for Savannah-area high school boys and girls headed into state meets

The GHSA state track and field meets are set to begin Thursday, running through Saturday at four different venues based on classification. The Greater Savannah area will be well represented with a slew of talented athletes set to compete.

The Savannah Arts Academy girls team, featuring a number of runners who helped lead the Panthers to a second-place finish in the Class 3A state cross country meet in the fall, is primed for another strong showing.

Savannah Arts junior Margaret Wade, shown during cross country season on Oct. 7, doubled up at a 3A sectional track and field meet by winning the 1,600 meters and 3,200.

Junior Margaret Wade doubled up at a 3A sectional meet by winning the 1,600 meters and 3,200. Her classmate, Lyric Olson, took home the 800 title while finishing second in the 1,600. The Savannah Arts 4x800 relay team also won a gold medal.

Leia Williams, the Liberty County thrower who has signed with Florida, won the discus and shot put in the same sectional meet. Last year, she won a shot put state title and finished second in the discus.

Liberty County junior Leia Williams finished second in the discus (149 feet, 6.5 inches) at the 2021 GHSA Class 3A state meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

In the boys 3A sectional meet, Johnson senior Jaleeh Kearse doubled up to win the shot put and the discus, while his teammate, junior Samari Dowdy, won the 100 meters. Dowdy has the second-best time in the event in the state among all classifications with a 10.41. Johnson senior Ted Hurst, who has signed to play football at Valdosta State, won the long jump.

Windsor Forest's D'Ante Bass, the standout basketball player who has signed with Georgetown, won the high jump and triple jump in the same meet. The Liberty County boys 4x100 relay team also took home a gold medal.

The Woodville-Tompkins team did well in a Class 2A sectional meet. The girls 4x100 team (Alexandria Moody, Zoey Simmons, Markayla Dillard and Jasmine Gaither) won a gold medal, while the boys 4x400 squad (Clint Lloyd, Nathan Anderson, Jordan Haskell and Jalil Coast) also won.

In a Class A Private sectional meet, defending state high jump champion Maggie Byrd, a junior at Savannah Christian, continued to excel by winning a gold medal. The SCPS girls 4x800 relay team (Kate Britt, Faith Bullied, Angelina Goodman and Kendall Lynes) also won.

On the boys side, SCPS sophomore Jamari McIvory won the 400-meter title.

Savannah Country Day junior John Ryan won the 800 at the same meet, and finished second in the 1,600.
