Cair Paravel (2-3)
Coach Doug Bonura on sophomore Jase Pavlik and junior Evan Will splitting reps at QB: Jase brings a little bit more of a passing look. He's savvy in the backfield, able to read downfield. Does a good job of knowing when to get out, slippery in that regard.
Evan just brings much more of a running component. While he still is able to throw and get the job done that way. He just adds a threat that is different than Jase on that running aspect.
Bonura on looking back and ahead: I think we've seen a lot of growth and experience I think they're going to continue to grab the bull by the horns and grow in their understanding of 'OK, how do we really execute this in live fashion now.'"
The next three games, they're all ranked in the top 15 I think, in 8 man. Now, we just got to find a way to win.
Hayden (5-0)
More:Bill Arnold on Hayden football, the Wing-T and winning
Coach Bill Arnold on what else the run game can do after a strong start: I think as much as anything, just the consistency behind what we're trying to do. I my opinion, we've had a few plays that have ended up in the negative and I don't think this group should have any negative plays. I told them in film (last) Monday I was very pleased with the ability to create the timing of the plays.
Arnold on the defense: I think guys are starting to understand the roles a little bit better defensively, and also, defense is such a game of angles, technique angles, the ability to come in with a bad attitude to tackle, so I think we are getting better at all of them.
Highland Park (4-1)
Coach Jermaine Monroe on the defensive effort to start the year: Defensively, we knew were young, and we knew it was gonna be some growing pains. Offensively, we knew that was gonna be our strength, we're going to score every game. So for last week for them to go ahead and get a goose egg that was amazing for them to get multiple turnovers in the game. A couple of defensive touchdowns and stuff like that'll build their confidence going into week 5.
Monroe on the focus to end the regular season: We're gonna continue to do what we do. I don't want to change too much. I don't want to add too much. Just want to fine tune what we have, what we've been doing.
Rossville (2-3)
Coach Derick Hammes on the growth from weeks 1-4: We're making progress and I think two of the more notable areas we've talked about this before, but we've had two weeks in a row where we haven't had an offensive penalty. We've talked about how just mistakes offensively, in general, have hurt us. The other side of the ball, I would just indicate that we're making progress defensively. Last week, we improved on giving up the big play so hopefully, those trends keep moving in our direction for us to improve.
Hammes on keys to the back stretch: The things that we're keying on, they're not changing. We just have to continue to emphasize the minimization of mistakes and then defensively we have to emphasize being responsible for our assignments so that we don't give up that big play.
Seaman (3-1)
Coach Jared Swafford on how they spent the bye week in week 4: We did as much as we could to try to simulate playing a few times throughout the week. rying to get some live scrimmage opportunities out there for guys, good on good, our top offense vs. our top defense and rotated in JV guys. As many reps as possible, even though it doesn't really truly simulate a game just to do what we could and mix in some Leavenworth styff so that we weren't just completely us on us.
Swafford on the season thus far: Growth is a good word. We've gotten a lot better and we continue to see that progress that we were hoping me to see from a somewhat inexperienced team and our guys are handling coaching. They're understanding the film study aspects a little bit more and just continue to see that improvement from week to week and so we're pleased where we're at with room to grow still.
Shawnee Heights (3-2)
Coach Jason Swift on what's stood out early on: They have just been resilient. They keep working hard in the weight room and they bring this confidence in themselves that they believe in each other and they believe in themselves that they can play and they've done a great job. I've been really impressed with how they've overcome the start and they're playing great football right now.
Swift on the defensive development: They've been phenomenal. They've come to play every single Friday night. A couple of the scores, whether it's week one or two, were just based on short fields. I've been impressed about kind of bend and not break attitude that they have. They've kept us in games and especially the last game against Basehor by making two goal line stops in the first quarter.
Silver Lake (3-2)
Coach Logan Pegram leading up to Week 5's rivalry win against Rossville: We knew that we were going to be pretty young. We're really void of snaps, varsity level snaps and I think we're progressing where we want to be. 2-2 is not where we want to be as a program but I think we can take a big step of kind of changing the direction of our season this week.
Pegram on areas of focus down the stretch: It's the basics, the normal stuff, it's blocking and tackling. The basic things that make you a good team, everyone wants to get lost in the weeds of offense and defense. But really to be a good team, we got to tackle, we got to run to the ball on defense and be assignment sound. On offense, we got to block and then we got to make plays when the balls in the air."
Topeka High (1-4)
Coach Carlos Kelly on the first win against Emporia: We're starting to grow up a little bit. We're starting to get a little recognition and experience. It's starting to pay off and paid off last Friday. The more reps we get, the more opportunities for players are on the field, the better they are. We want things to happen now, but they're just not going to happen as rapidly as we would like.
Topeka West (0-5)
Coach Russell Norton: I think we've made a tremendous amount of growth, leaps and bounds, but we know, again, it's not like we took over a team has had a lot of success recently and we know it's a process. I love the effort of the guys and they've bought into what the coaching staff and I are selling.
Washburn Rural (3-2)
Coach Steve Buhler on the team's response after a tough loss to Manhattan: They're pretty focused, kind of how they've reacted in game so far, and we're kind of seeing the same reaction now. They're pretty good about bouncing back pretty quick
Buhler after the Manhattan loss: We just shot ourselves and foot we've been talking all season about (needing) to clean some things up. We keep needing to keep working on that.
