Topeka city crews resume work on Eighth Ave. ‘road diet’

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The construction site was inactive for several weeks amid winter weather conditions, but city crews are back working on Eighth Avenue in downtown Topeka.

Crews picked up right where they left off Wednesday morning, completing pavement work on Eight Avenue between Jackson and Quincy streets.

The construction is part of a ‘road diet’ project started back in September, and the city’s hope is to wrap things up by the end of the week. The project involves converting Eighth Avenue to three lanes rather than four to make room for a bike lane.

In an update the city released in December saying concrete work projects, like sidewalks from Topeka Boulevard to Kansas Avenue, new medians and bulb-outs on Van Buren Street and water line and storm sewers a Quincy Street, have been completed.

Resuming working on Eighth Avenue Wednesday did not change any of the traffic control patterns that have been in place for the past several weeks, according to the city.
