Police are investigating whether the city's 18th homicide death this year, which happened late Sunday in southwest Topeka, may have been justifiable.

Investigators on Tuesday morning weren't making public the name, age or gender of the deceased person, whom Lt. Donna Eubanks said was reported shot once about 1125 p.m. Sunday in the 4100 block of S.W. Twilight Drive.

Twilight Drive runs east and west and is located about three blocks south of S.W. 29th Street. The block in which the homicide occurred is located just east of S.W. Gage Boulevard.

"All parties involved in this incident have been located and interviewed at this point in the investigation," Eubanks said.

She asked anyone with further information about the case to call Detective Jason Judd at 785-368-1582.

Eubanks said investigative reports would be sent to the office of Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay, who is to decide whether criminal charges will be filed.

The person fatally shot Sunday became Topeka's 18th homicide victim this year. The capital city's record of 30 homicide victims was set in 2017.

Sunday's killing was the westernmost among 2023's Topeka homicides. Previously, this year's westernmost homicides took place during a fire in at 916 S.W. Warren Avenue, seven blocks west of S.W. Macvicar Avenue.
