Topeka's Arab Shrine Temple will offer a free screening clinic for children with orthopedic conditions who might benefit from the services it offers.

The clinic will be from 9 a.m. to noon May 14 at the Arab Shrine Temple, 1305 S. Kansas Ave. All children under age 18 are eligible to be screened.

The clinic will provide a chance for a local physician to evaluate children who may have orthopedic problems and, if necessary, refer them to seek treatment at one of the 22 hospitals Shriners Hospitals for Children operates, said John Sidwell, clinic chairman.

Families need not know a member of the Shriners fraternity to participate in the clinic, he said.

Shriners' hospitals in the U.S. provide medical care to help children live a better life after they find themselves needing specialized pediatric care, including treatment for orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate.

Acceptance as a patient is based solely on the child’s medical needs. The website for those facilities says they provide care without regard to the families' ability to pay, qualify for financial assistance or acquire third-party coverage.

Arab Shrine has been holding the free screening clinics in Topeka since 2017.

Children taking part will merely be screened for orthopedic problems, and not diagnosed, Sidwell said. For more information, call Sidwell at 785-478-7111.
