Topgolf brings ‘modern golf’ experience to St. Petersburg with 8th Florida location

Bradenton-area residents who enjoy Topgolf’s “modern golf” experience can now take advantage of a second location in the Tampa Bay area.

Topgolf, famed for its climate-controlled driving ranges, music, huge targets, TVs and hand-crafted food and beverage menu, opened at 220 Carillon Parkway North, St. Petersburg, on Friday. The opening of the company’s newest location follows an extended legal battle between the company, the city and concerned residents that delayed the project for several years.

“Think of it as a modern golf experience where anyone — including people who have never picked up a golf club and those who want to perfect their swing — can participate in the sport in a relaxed, no-pressure environment,” the company wrote in a press release.

St. Petersburg marks Topgolf’s eighth location in Florida. Topgolf already has locations in Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Lake Mary, Miami-Doral, Miami Gardens, Orlando and Tampa.

Topgolf St. Petersburg includes 102 climate-controlled outdoor hitting bays spread across three levels. Each bay contains lounge-style couches or high-top tables outfitted with Topgolf’s Toptracer technology, which tracks the flight path, distance and other parameters of each golf ball. According to the company website, they will also offer half-priced games on Tuesdays, and players will have the opportunity to polish their swing with a Topgolf instructor.

Topgolf controversy

The St. Petersburg location almost didn’t happen because of concerns from some Carillon-area residents.

In 2019, after it was announced it would be coming to the city, 14 Carillon residents sued Topgolf and the city of St. Petersburg, claiming the city failed to do due diligence and that they’d been kept in the dark about the plans to building the complex in their neighborhood, Florida Politics reported.

In 2021, Pinellas County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Ramsberger ruled in favor of the City of St. Petersburg and Topgolf in the controversial civil case, St. Pete Catalyst reported.

Construction on the St. Petersburg complex began in 2022, three years after the city struck an agreement with TopGolf.
