Tornado confirmed in Greenup County, Ironton

Apr. 13—CHARLESTON — The National Weather Service center in Charleston said a tornado formed in Greenup County and traveled to Ironton during the severe storms on April 2.

Originally classified as a microburst with winds up to 90 mph, the event has been upgraded to an EF1 tornado with winds up 110.

The reclassification happened after drone footage provided aerial views of the area. Those views showed "campers tossed in a counter-clockwise motion and some converge in the tree damage."

The path of the tornado was also lengthened from 6.41 miles to 8 miles as well as the width from 100 yards to 250 years wide. The tornado touched down at 10:12 a.m. and lasted until 10:20 a.m.

Among the damage was the destruction of a salt storage dome which caused significant injury to an employee.
