Tornado and severe river flood warning issued for Butte County

(FOX40.COM) — The National Weather Service enacted a “Severe River Flood Warning” that was shortly followed by an “Extreme Tornado Warning” and “Severe Thunderstorm Warning” on Monday.

“Take cover now!,” The National Weather Service said in the warning about the tornado warning. “Move to a basement or in interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.”

Tornado warning issued in Butte and Plumas counties

Officials advised people in the area not to wait to see or hear the tornado and to take precautions as soon as possible. The warning is in effect for Southwestern Plumas County and Butte County.

At around 3:30 p.m. the National Weather Service (NWS) issued the Severe Thunderstorm Warning’ for Central Plumas County, Eastern Tehama County, and Central Butte County. The thunderstorm was located near the Oroville Dam and moving at nearly 40 mph.

Quarter-sized hail and 60-mph winds are also in the forecast, according to NWS.

“Hail damage is expected,” NWS said in the warning. “Expected wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.”

Areas impacted by the thunderstorm include Chico, Paradise, Stirling City, De Sabla Powerhouse, Forest Ranch, Lovelock, Richardson Springs, Magalia, Durham, Dayton, and Concow.

Similar to tornado preparedness, officials said to “move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.”

NWS warned to also be on the look out for river floods. A warning is in effect until Tuesday evening. Minor flooding is forecast near the Sacramento River at Ord Ferry.

Ord Ferry Road and additional roads in Glenn and Colusa counties are closed due to flooding.
