Tornado touched down in Aberdeen, crossed Parkway into Hazlet

A tornado touched down briefly in Aberdeen and Hazlet around 5:10 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

The tornado touched down in Aberdeen behind the Highline Arena and crossed the Garden State Parkway into the residential neighborhood in Hazlet along Bedle Road, according to the National Weather Service. The tornado was rated on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with an intensity of EF-0, which is considered weak. It’s estimated peak wind was 85 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, several large tree limbs were blown off and a few tree trunks were snapped, which caused damage to utility poles and power lines. Trees and fences were also uprooted.

In between Sophia Drive and Carlow Way, about a dozen homes “sustained cosmetic damage, including vinyl siding blown off, soffit damage, gutter damage, and/or roof shingles blown off.”

A tree also fell onto a home and caused structural damage to a roof, according to the National Weather Service.

Along Park View Drive, a few trees were uprooted and a utility pole was damaged. Near Linda Place, Beers Street and Rutgers Street, a few homes suffered “minor cosmetic damage,” according to the National Weather Service.

Although the tornado dissipated in the neighborhood before reaching Route 35, four utility poles were pushed over or broken according to the National Weather Service.

"It has been determined that the damage to the poles was caused by straight line winds," according to the National Weather Service.

In total, the tornado lasted about a minute and traveled a length of 0.8 miles. According to the National Weather Service, no fatalities or injuries were reported.
