A tornado watch in effect in Providence County. What we know.

PROVIDENCE – The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch through 3 p.m. for Providence County and northern Rhode Island.

The weather service urged residents to listen to NOAA Weather Radio or go to weather.gov on the internet for more information.

According to the advisory, winds could exceed 40 mph in Providence, Pawtucket, East Providence, Woonsocket, Coventry, Cumberland, North Providence, Johnston, Attleboro, Smithfield, Lincoln, Central Falls, Burrillville, and Seekonk.

Officials advise residents to get indoors when they hear thunder and not to resume outdoor activities until at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed.

A flood watch remains in effect throughout much of the state through 2 a.m. Monday, with impacts expected in Providence, Kent, Newport and Washington counties and southeastern Massachusetts.

The flood watch is in place for Foster, Smithfield, Providence, Coventry, West Greenwich, East Greenwich, Warwick, West Warwick, Bristol, Narragansett, Westerly, and Newport, according to the weather alert issued Sunday morning.

The weather service warns of excessive runoff possibly resulting in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, in addition to flooding in poor drainage and urban areas.

Officials warn not drive through flooded roads or underpasses.
