Torrential rains force closure of major highway in Louisville, Mississippi

Mississippi Highway 25 near and in Louisville in Winston County was closed after torrential rains dumped several inches in just a few minutes on Thursday.

Many travelers were stuck in Louisville, trying to get through, but won't be able to until the waters have receded.

The National Weather Service had predicted strong storms for that area with the possibility of 6-10 inches of rain and widespread flooding possible.

Rains were expected to continue in the area in northeast Mississippi until mid afternoon.

Many travelers using Mississippi 25 were diverting near Kosciusko and driving North from there.

Winston County Sheriff Jason Pugh said law enforcement officers rescued three people from vehicles and removed several others from homes as the water rose.

Swift water washed one car into a ditch, and the driver escaped before the car submerged. The man stood knee-deep in the floodwater on top of his car as officers rescued him, Pugh told The Associated Press.

About 17,500 people live in Winston County. The largest town, Louisville, is which is about 95 miles (153 kilometers) northeast of Jackson.
