Torrential rains lash New Zealand for third day

STORY: People in Nelson, a city with a population of more than 50,000, shoveled mud off the streets and were left with debris strewn across their properties after the latest rainstorms worsened conditions in the sodden landscape. More than 230 homes in the city have been evacuated with many public facilities and roads closed, authorities said.

Weather forecaster Metservice's data showed part of the north of the South Island had received well over 300 millimeters of rain (11.8 inches) in the past 24 hours. It has heavy rain warnings in place for parts of the west of the South Island and in the north of the North Island.

Authorities in Nelson city warned continuing rain, with another front due to arrive on Friday (August 19), could mean more land slips, flooding and evacuations.
