Game Of Thrones has often used hair as a sneaky way to give us a hint about its characters' positions of political power.

Whether it's the Dothraki's plaited beards signifying how many battles they've won (or lost), Daenerys' ever more intricate braids reflecting her increasingly complex journey to become queen, or Jaime Lannister's fade from golden-topped Kingslayer to weary silver fox, when it comes to GoT, hair is never coincidental.

So when Sansa Stark finally ascended her throne as Queen of the North in this week's finale episode, we couldn't help but notice a few secret details about her hairstyle of choice.

Having previously worn elaborate Princess Leia style plaits whilst in Kings Landing in the earlier series, as the eldest Stark sister endured every husband GoT threw at her, her hair in turn became more pared back and severe.

Fans of the show remarked on how similar Sansa's centre-parted pulled back 'do looked to the style worn by her on-screen mother Catelyn Stark, before her untimely death in season 3.

Well when you're fighting the undead, plaiting your hair tends to drop to the bottom of the to-do list.

But, in one last GoT hair-themed twist, Sansa worked an entirely new look for her Winterfell coronation. In place of a seriously neat half-up 'do, the real life faux red head was shown sitting on the throne with her hair totally loose before being adorned with a metal crown in the shape of the Stark house wolf sigil.

As with all things Thrones, the Stark's new look was no coincidence. In fact, it was inspired by Britain's greatest queen, Elizabeth I. Elizabeth too wore her hair defiantly down her for coronation, in contrast to the elaborate curls she came to be known for.

'For so long, Sansa’s hair changed season by season depending on who was influencing her. The first few episodes she was a Northerner in Winterfell and took after her mother with a simple braid down the back. Then when she went to King’s Landing it was a big, decadent halo that was very much like what the Queen wore. With Littlefinger, she dyes her hair black and wears all black. Then she goes back to Winterfell and returns to her mother’s hair,' actress Sophie Turner told InStyle earlier this year.

'She created her own identity in season 7 and that kind of runs through to season 8. She’s chosen how she wants her hair to be, and she’s finally the leader and influencer instead of being influenced by everyone else.'
