Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League final score and result as Reds hold on for victory

Today’s encounter is a crucial one for Jurgen Klopp and Antonio Conte. Both managers are under pressure to deliver for their respective clubs but for vastly different reasons. Conte is trying to prove that Tottenham can be a major player in the Premier League title race whilst Klopp wants to get Liverpool back to winning ways and into the top four race.

With the margins for error so slim at the top of the table Conte’s Spurs cannot afford to slip up against Liverpool this afternoon. They’ve had three poor weeks in the league with consecutive defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle before Rodrigo Bentancur rescued them with a 92nd minute winner against Bournemouth last time out. Three points today is a must if Spurs want to keep the pressure on Manchester City and Arsenal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, come into the game 9th in the table and eight points away from the top four having been beaten by Nottingham Forest and Leeds in their last two league outings. However, Klopp’s men tend to step up in big games – they’re the only ones to beat City this season – and with the pressure on they could prove to be too much to handle for Spurs especially with Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez hitting form.

Newcastle thrash Southampton to seal fourth straight win and move into top three

17:29 , Michael Jones

Miguel Almiron scored his seventh goal in as many games as Newcastle United beat Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s.

The Paraguay international continued his hot streak in front of goal, breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute.

Substitute Chris Wood, who replaced Callum Wilson at half-time, doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 58th minute before Joe Willock quickly made it 3-0.

Romain Perraud pulled one back for the hosts late but the celebrations were short-lived as Bruno Guimaraes fired in the Magpies’ fourth a minute later.

With England boss Gareth Southgate looking on, Saints lost possession early with a sloppy turnover in midfield as the Magpies worked the ball to Jacob Murphy on the far left, but his cross-cum-shot was easily caught by Gavin Bazunu.

Michael Olise hits late winner as Crystal Palace come from behind to defeat West Ham

17:26 , Michael Jones

Michael Olise curled home a stoppage-time winner as Crystal Palace finally broke their duck on the road with a dramatic 2-1 victory at West Ham United.

Said Benrahma had fired West Ham into the lead with a sizzling strike before Wilfried Zaha hauled Palace level before the interval.

There was VAR controversy 10 minutes from the end when Michail Antonio went down after being tugged by Marc Guehi and referee Paul Tierney gave a penalty, only to overturn his decision after consulting the pitchside monitor.

Instead, with the clock running down, Antonio wastefully chipped a cross into the arms of Palace keeper Vicente Guaita and within seconds, the visitors had broken up the other end and scored.

It meant West Ham’s six-match winning streak at home came to an end, while Palace secured their first away win in the Premier League this season.

Aston Villa start Unai Emery era with convincing win over Man United

17:23 , Michael Jones

A new era for Aston Villa began with a reminder for their opponents that rebuilding under a new manager is rarely a straightforward process. Unai Emery’s first game in charge brought a famous and fully deserved win that ended Manchester United’s nine-game unbeaten run, punctured the sense of progress that Erik ten Hag has built of late and inflicted United’s first Premier League defeat at Villa Park since 1995.

It was after that game – which also finished 3-1 – that Alan Hansen claimed Alex Ferguson’s side would “win nothing with kids”. That infamously proved to be an overly pessimistic assessment but, 27 years later, it would be hard to be too critical of this United performance. Even their goal was scored by a Villa player, with Luke Shaw’s effort deflecting in off Jacob Ramsey to offer brief hope of a fightback that never arrived.

From Villa, this was the type of disciplined, organised and highly effective display that Emery has built a career upon and may be exactly what is needed to resurrect their season and stave off the threat of relegation. Leon Bailey’s crisp strike and Lucas Digne’s wonderful free kick established an early two-goal lead that was momentarily halved on the cusp of half time, only to be restored by Ramsey after the break and then comfortably defended.

Half-time: Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

45+1 mins: Tottenham have tended to grow into games this season performing their best football in the second half of matches. They’ll need to do so again here as they head into the break two goals behind Liverpool.

Mo Salah has a brace and seems to have rediscovered his best form. Will the Reds go on to win from here?

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

17:15 , Michael Jones

43 mins: Hugo Lloris is called into action once again for Spurs after Harvey Elliott takes a snapshot from just outside the box. It’s an awkward one for the goalkeeper as the ball bounces just before him but the Frenchman manages to turn it wide of goal.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool (Salah, 40’)⚽️

17:10 , Michael Jones

40 mins: Mistake from Eric Dier who attempts to head an aerial pass back to his own goalkeeper. Instead he gets it wrong and nods the ball to Mo Salah who carries it into the box before chipping the ball over Hugo Lloris and doubling Liverpool’s lead!

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

17:08 , Michael Jones

36 mins: Liverpool are just trying to take the sting out of Tottenham’s play by maintaining possession and slowly working their way up the pitch.

Ben Davies arrives late for a tackle on Harvey Elliott and leaves the midfielder sprawled on the floor awaiting some medical treatment.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

17:05 , Michael Jones

33 mins: Fabinho sends a heavy pass back to Alexander-Arnold who has to contend with Perisic to get to the loose ball. The Liverpool right-back comes off worse then fouls Sessegnon as Spurs flood men up the pitch.

The Reds manage to deal with the resultant free kick though.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

17:02 , Michael Jones

30 mins: Close! Liverpool work the ball over to the right side where Harvey Elliott brings it under control. He floats a cross into the box but puts it over the heads of his waiting team mates.

Spurs head the ball away but it drops to Thiago Alcantara who drills an effort from range and hits it straight at Eric Dier who blocks it.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

16:59 , Michael Jones

27 mins: Konate’s having a decent game so far. Harry Kane looks to curl one into the middle as Perisic makes a splitting run in between Alexander-Arnold and Konate.

The Liverpool centre-back is aware of the danger though and just holds Perisic off long enough for the pass to skip past him and out into space.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

16:57 , Michael Jones

24 mins: A long diagonal ball comes over the head of Alexander-Arnold and Sessegnon controls it with a nudge into the box. He sprints behind the Liverpool right-back and almost gets in on goal but Konate is covering and gets the ball clear.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

16:53 , Michael Jones

21 mins: Tottenham have settled into the game now and are seeing more of the ball. They’re moving it well and pressing up the pitch to hurry the Liverpool defenders.

Emerson Royal swings in a cross from the right side but Alisson gets out and punches the ball away.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

16:50 , Michael Jones

18 mins: There’s a very viable penalty appeal for Tottenham after Trent Alexander-Arnold loses the ball. Ryan Sessegnon makes an overlapping run into the box and is played in by Ivan Perisic.

Alexander-Arnold looks to rectify his mistake and nudges Sessegnon in the back as he collects the ball. The Tottenham defender hits the deck but a VAR check doesn’t overturn the referee’s initial decision of goal kick.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

16:47 , Michael Jones

14 mins: Off the post!

It was almost an immediate response from Tottenham. A threaded pass comes up to Harry Kane who peels away from Ibrahima Konate and flicks a cross into the middle of the box.

Ivan Perisic is waiting and gets a slight touch on the ball. Alisson comes out to claim the ball but it hits him on the head and rebounds onto the nearest post before bouncing wide!

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool (Salah, 11’)⚽️

16:42 , Michael Jones

11 mins: Liverpool’s dominance pays off! Mo Salah gives them the lead.

Salah actually starts the move with a run into midfield before sending the ball out to the left side. Robertson again is left bags of space and he chips a pass into the box.

Darwin Nunez controls it with his back to goal then sends it across to Salah who takes a touch and slams it into the back of the net.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

16:38 , Michael Jones

8 mins: Chance! What a pass!

Trent Alexander-Arnold sees the ball rolling towards him and laces a first time diagonal cross over the pitch to play Darwin Nunez in behind the lines.

The striker cuts inside and curls a low effort towards the far bottom corner but just sends it wide of the goal. Liverpool have bossed these opening stages so far.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

16:36 , Michael Jones

6 mins: Liverpool recover the ball deep in their own half and work it across to Robertson who seems to have loads of space to operate in already.

Nunez drifts wide on the left side and Robertson flicks the ball over to him once again. This time the Liverpool forward carries the ball into the penalty area, ignores Mo Salah’s calls for the pass but then runs it over the byline.

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

16:33 , Michael Jones

3 mins: Chance! Andy Robertson delivers an aerial pass down the left wing and watches as the ball bounces into the penalty area. Darwin Nunez splits Spurs’ back three and latches onto the dropping ball with a left-shooted shot.

He catches it on the volley and smokes an effort at goal only for Hugo Lloris to leap in front of the ball and palm it wide of the target.

Kick off: Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp knows importance of Liverpool’s ‘massive game’ at Tottenham

15:58 , Michael Jones

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits Sunday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur represents a “massive” game for his frustratingly inconsistent side.

The Reds have accrued almost as many points from six Champions League matches (15) as they have from a dozen games in the Premier League (16).

In midweek they enjoyed a morale-boosting 2-0 win over previously-unbeaten Napoli, arguably Europe’s form side, to add to two victories they have enjoyed over Manchester City in the league and FA Community Shield this season.

But, domestically, they have lost their last two games to Nottingham Forest and Leeds, who were both in the bottom two at the time, and points-wise Liverpool are closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

A shocking start for Liverpool

15:53 , Michael Jones

Liverpool have dropped 20 points in 12 league matches this season with four wins, four draws and four defeats. That’s just two shy of their final total last season.

The Reds have also recorded more victories in this season’s Champions League - five - than they have in the Premier League.

Comeback kings?

15:48 , Michael Jones

Tottenham have failed to score in the first half of any of their last six matches in all competitions, and have trailed after 45 minutes in each of their previous four games.

But, Spurs have won 10 points from losing positions this term, more than any other top-flight side prior to the latest round of fixtures.

Jurgen Klopp laments ‘disaster’ of injuries in final club games before World Cup

15:43 , Michael Jones

Jurgen Klopp believes it is a “disaster” for the players who will miss the World Cup because they get injured in club games in the weeks immediately before a winter tournament is crowbarred into the schedule.

A host of leading footballers have been ruled out of the competition in Qatar or are doubts for it after being hurt in recent fixtures, including Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, Heung-Min Son and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Normally players would have had a longer time to recover between their final club matches and the World Cup, and Klopp believes the current spate of injuries were predictable because of the “crazy” way the calendar has been organised.

Tottenham vs Liverpool team changes

15:38 , Michael Jones

Antonio Conte makes just two changes to the Tottenham team that lined-up against Marseille during the week. Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura are both injured so they’re replaced in the starting XI by Yves Bissouma and Emerson Royal.

Jurgen Klopp meanwhile makes three changes to the Liverpool team that defeated Napoli in the Champions League. Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott all return with Kostas Tsimikas, Curtis Jones and James Milner dropping out.

Klopp on Nunez

15:25 , Michael Jones

Darwin Nunez has slowly been growing into his role at the top of Liverpool’s forward line and has scored in two of the Reds last three outings across all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp was asked about Nunez’s uptick in form and he replied: “Big steps and still space for improvement because the boy is an incredible package.

“You could see immediately he is a real threat in the finishing area, involved in a lot of things. That’s why you then realise, the few big chances he missed, imagine he would have scored from them as well.

“He is involved in pretty much everything. He is always an option to pass to, to cross the ball to, these kind of things. He came on [against Napoli] and didn’t play extremely long but was involved in both goals, which is good. So, big steps, absolutely.”

Conte on his year at Spurs

15:20 , Michael Jones

Antonio Conte was appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager just over a year ago and was asked to reflect on his first 12 months in charge of the north London side at a recent press conference.

“There have been lots of positives.” he said, “We’ve improved a lot, in many things. Now, there is a clear vision, a path to follow.

“In one year, with the club all together, I think we made not so many mistakes, maybe it’s better to say it this way, not be presumptuous.

“We still need time and patience, it’s not easy to win in England. I’m really proud of the work we did together. I feel to stay in a family, and I’m starting to feel the people who work here, their sense of belonging for the Club, and this is very important.”

Tottenham vs Liverpool

15:15 , Michael Jones

Tottenham’s 4-1 win against Liverpool at Wembley on 22nd October 2017 is their only victory in the last 21 meetings in all competitions.

Liverpool have won five of their past nine league away fixtures versus Spurs, losing just once and matches between these sides have produced 10 Premier League own goals, more than any other fixture.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang toils to another Chelsea blank amid uncertain tactical plan

15:10 , Michael Jones

Vindication and victory almost came cloaked in perfection for Mikel Arteta. Almost, because as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang trotted off after an utterly ineffectual display in a reunion with the club who rejected him, Gabriel had just put Arsenal ahead. It was Gabriel Magalhaes, admittedly, and not Gabriel Jesus, the anti-Aubameyang, the belated replacement for the man Arsenal exiled to Barcelona only to see him reappear in London.

But it was, as their fans sang, one-nil to the Arsenal. There was another scoreline, less significant but nonetheless revealing of Arteta’s ethos: 37-8. Jesus had mustered 37 touches by the time the other No. 9 departed, Aubameyang just eight. It was the fewest on the pitch and if that is unsurprising – he comes from the breed of forward who lingers on the fringes of games, whereas the hyperactive Jesus prefers a greater level of involvement – he took anonymity to new levels.

Or, arguably, familiar levels for Chelsea, given Romelu Lukaku infamously played the full 90 minutes in last season’s game against Crystal Palace and mustered a mere seven. The highly-paid spectators at Stamford Bridge are not all found in the executive boxes.

European club bosses stand firm in fight against Super League plans

15:05 , Michael Jones

European club chiefs have insisted they remain opposed to a breakaway Super League amid efforts to revive the project.

The proposal to establish a lucrative competition, in which 15 of the continent’s biggest names would be permanent members, was shot down in April last year amid an angry response from fans of the Premier League teams who had signed up as the British Government, UEFA and FIFA came out against it.

A22, the company behind the scheme, last month sought to reposition the plan, but the European Club Association’s view remains unchanged.

Tottenham vs Liverpool early team news and predicted line-ups

15:00 , Michael Jones

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte confirmed he will be without several players for Sunday’s visit of Liverpool. The Italian said: “Richarlison is not available. It is the same for (Cristian) Romero but (Rodrigo) Bentancur is much better. Today he was part of the training session. It was the same for (Dejan) Kulusevski, today he had half training session with us.

“The problem is Lucas Moura is having some difference phases for his pain. Today he was really bad and he said to me he was worried but I asked him to try to be available because we need (him). Also Sonny (Son Heung-min) is having surgery (eye injury).”

Jordan Henderson is fit and available but James Milner is not after suffering concussion. Naby Keita, Joel Matip, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Arthur Melo all remain out.

Predicted line-ups

Tottenham: Lloris; Dier, Lenglet, Davies; Emerson Royal, Bissouma, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Sessegnon; Kane, Lucas Moura.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Thiago, Fabinho, Henderson; Firmino, Salah, Darwin Nunez.

Tottenham vs Liverpool

The 2pm kick offs have all reached half-time with some surprising scores.

Aston Villa are leading 2-1 against Manchester United with Newcastle 1-0 up versus Southampton. Miguel Almiron gets himself on the scoresheet once again for his fourth Premier League goal in four matches.

Elsewhere West Ham level with Crystal Palace after Wilfred Zaha cancelled out Said Benrahma’s opener.

Following the conclusion of these matches there’s another huge game in London as Tottenham host Liverpool in the 4.30pm kick off. Build up for that one starts around 3pm with team news expected not too long after that.

Arsenal return to top of Premier League with narrow derby win over Chelsea

14:16 , Michael Jones

Arsenal stay up there, and show Chelsea the level required. This commanding 1-0 win was undeniably Mikel Arteta’s most significant win of the season so far, as well as another step forward, while a notable step back for Graham Potter.

Among a few key elements was the fact this was the first time there has been an away win in a meeting of the old “big six” this season, something that not even Manchester City have managed. It means Arsenal stay ahead of the champions ahead of the last week before the World Cup, and have given themselves the best possible chance of staying there for the month-long break.

While there remains this expectation that City will eventually streak and bring all their quality to bear, such a position also gives Arsenal the best possible chance of doing something special this season.

Chelsea vs Arsenal player ratings: William Saliba shines as Aubameyang flops against former club

14:13 , Michael Jones

Arsenal produced a strong performance to beat a listless Chelsea 1-0 on Sunday, moving back to the top of the Premier League in the process.

The Gunners dominated the early exchanges without really testing Edouard Mendy - Gabriel Jesus missing a good chance from close range in the biggest opportunity of the half.

It was fairly dismal throughout from the hosts, who lacked any conviction in build-up play or threat on goal all game, and Graham Potter will know he faces a big task to find the right formula after the World Cup if the Blues’ season isn’t to fizzle out quickly.

The winning goal came from Gabriel Magalhaes just past the hour mark, prodding in from close range after a corner was missed by everybody - and there was simply no response from Chelsea in search of an equalier.

Here are the player ratings from Stamford Bridge on Sunday:

Ivan Toney ‘assisting Football Association with enquiries’ over betting claims

12:56 , Michael Jones

England World Cup hopeful Ivan Toney has said he is helping the Football Association with an investigation after it was reported he is being probed over allegations of historic match betting.

A report in the Sun said the 26-year-old Brentford striker is the subject of an inquiry over historical allegations which relate to a period before he joined his current club.

The FA has declined to comment on the report, but Toney used social media to say he was co-operating with an investigation, indicating he hoped it would not impact his chances of being named in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad on Thursday.

“I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today,” Toney said on Twitter. “I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.”

Half-time: Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal

12:48 , Michael Jones

45+1 mins: A lack of quality in the final third was the defining characteristic of that first half. Arsenal created the better chances and should have scored through Gabriel Jesus but Chelsea seem comfortable enough out of possession.

The first goal could be a crucial one at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Nothing to separate the teams at the break.

Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal

Odegaard has a through ball blocked off but it rebounds out to Xhaka who flicks a pass over to Jesus on the left. Jesus crosses one into the middle but a deflection loops the ball kindly up to Edouard Mendy in goal.

10 mins: It’s been a bright start from Arsenal. They’ve come to Stamford Bridge full of confidence and are trying to take the game to Chelsea. A free kick into the home side’s penalty area is cleared as far as Ben White who has an optimistic strike at goal but belts it well wide.

Raheem Sterling brings the ball down the right side and Chelsea and slides a fine pass into the area for Kai Havertz to collect. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang peels off his marker and moves into the centre of the box but Havertz crosses the ball to the back post instead of pulling it back. None of his team mates are around and Arsenal take over possession.

Free kick Chelsea this time.
