Tough day for Pontiac, Prairie Central in IPC baseball play

Henry Brummel was a little off his game and Monticello took advantage for a 7-1 victory in Illini Prairie Conference baseball at The Ballpark at Williamson Field Monday.

Compounding the issue for Brummel was not getting support from the offense. PTHS managed just four hits in the contest, and none after Brummel doubled to drive in the Tribe's lone marker in the fourth inning.

On the bump, Brummel gave up seven runs, five of which were earned, and five walks in four innings. He did strike out seven.

The trouble started with a pair of walks with two outs that loaded the bases in the first inning. A triple then cleared the bases and a wild pitch allowed a run to score as the Sages took a 4-0 lead.

Of the five walks allowed by Brummel, three came in that first inning.

Monticello scored three runs in the fourth inning, all coming with two outs.

Pontiac's offense showed life in the bottom fo the fourth inning. Starting with a Logan Barnett single, the Indians looked to get on the board. Brummel got the Indians there with a double to left that drove in Barnett.

Duncan Eilts came on to run for the PTHS pitcher and Zayn Eilts drew a walk with two outs. Both were left stranded. The only Pontiac baserunner after over the final three innings was Brummel, who drew a walk with two outs in the sixth.

Brummel had a double and run batted in for the Indians (9-8, 3-3). Barnett, Michael Kuska and Cayden Masching each singled.

Drew Wayman threw three scoreless innings of relief, walking one and giving up a hit while striking out two.

PBL 6, Prairie Central 3

PAXTON — A four-run fifth inning lifted host Paxton-Buckley-Loda to a 6-3 win over Prairie Central in an Illini Prairie Conference baseball contest Monday.

The game was tied at 2-2 when the Panthers came to bat in the last of the fifth inning. The first five batters reached base. A bases-loaded walk forced in the go-ahead run and a base hit drove in two before a sacrifice fly plated the final run.

PBL took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Hawks responded with a pair of markers in the second frame. Evan Hartman, Clayton Bahler and Connor Gibson each drew walks to load the bases with one out.

Easton Friedman lofted a sacrifice fly yo center that drove in Hartman and sent Bahler to third. Bahler scored the go-ahead marker on a passed ball with Camden Palmore at bat.

Prairie Central added run in the sixth inning. Gavin Tredenick doubled to lead off the inning but was thrown out trying to steal second. Hartman drew a walk following a strikeout and scored when Bahler ripped a two-base hit to right, making it a 6-3 game.

Bahler and Tredenick each had a double as the Hawks (4-13, 1-6) collected five hits. Palmore, Noah Nagel and Lucas Steidinger each singled.

Caden Addis took the loss on the bump. He gave up six runs (four earned), five hits and four walks while striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings. Carson Friedman closed out the contest, fanning one.

Fieldcrest 2, Lexington 1

WENONA — Lexington couldn't collect the big hit as the Minutemen dropped a 2-1 decision to host Fieldcrest in a Heart of Illinois Conference contest Monday.

Taking the tough-luck loss was Camden Hardman, who allowed just one hit in six innings. He walked three and struck out nine.

The Knights scored single runs in the first and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. The first run scored on a squeeze bunt and the second came home on an error.

Drake Powell led off the Lexington seventh with a two-base hit. Hardman walked and Ethan Storm came on as the courtesy runner. Hayden Sennett bunted to load the bases.

A pop out and a strikeout followed, leaving the Minutemen with the bases loaded and two outs. Blaine Friedmansky coaxed a free pass that forced in Powell that made it 2-1. A comebacker ended the game.

Lexington (4-11) managed four hits, three of them going for extra bases. Powell, Nolan Bowles and Preston Wiltz each doubled while Hardman singled.

Tri-Valley 6, EPG 2

DOWNS — El Paso-Gridley scored first but Tri-Valley had answers as the host Vikings posted a 6-2 victory in a Heart of Illinois Conference contest Monday.

The Titans (7-10) scored a run in the third inning. Jeremy Knapp got EPG on the board when he scored on Mason Vandegraft ground out. Knapp singled to lead off the inning.

Tri-Valley scored two times in the bottom of the third.

Caden Deckard led off the EPG fourth with a base hit. He scored when Will McNamara hit into a fielder's choice, making it 2-2.

The Vikings added three runs in the last of the fourth to take control of the contest.

Vandegraft had a hit and run batted in while Deckard and Knapp each singled for the three El Paso-Gridley safeties.

Mac Raymer took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned), seven hits and one walk. He fanned seven. Vandegraft gave up an unearned run, a hit and struck out one.
