Tour the crumbling villa Queen Elizabeth once lived in

It's the only property outside Britain that Queen Elizabeth called home.

Malta's Villa Guardamangia was her residence for two years from 1949.

NEWSREEL VOICEOVER: "At the Villa Guardamangia, the residence of Earl and Countess Mountbatten, the Princess joined the Duke in time to celebrate their second wedding anniversary."

Sadly today the two-storey property is a shadow of its former self.

A home once fit for a future Queen now boasts only bare rooms, peeling paint, and an overgrown garden.

But the villa, near Valletta, is about to get a new lease of life as a museum of the Mediterranean island's links with the UK and the royals.

The government of Malta has acquired the property and is hoping to restore it to its former glory.

An undertaking that could cost up to 10 million euros.

Heritage Malta's curator Kenneth Gambin also plans an oral history exercise.

"Trying to attract whatever people used to work here or who had relatives who worked here or have any memories of whatever kind of when the Princess used to live here."

When Princess Elizabeth called the villa home, she was in the first years of her marriage.

She moved to Malta when her husband Philip was based there in command of a Royal Navy frigate.

The hope is that when the villa's restored, it could prove a major attraction for tourists.
