Tour de France stage 13 result LIVE: Mads Pedersen sprints to victory as Jonas Vingegaard retains lead

Stage 13 of the 2022 Tour de France sees the peloton transition from the Alps to the Massif hills, the day after Britain’s Tom Pidcock stormed to a stunning victory on Alpe d’Huez during Stage 12.

The 22-year-old claimed his first stage win of the Tour and became the youngest rider, and only second Briton, to win the iconic mountain climb in the race’s history. The Olympic mountain bike champion made the first attack on the famous Alpe, some 10km from the summit, and gradually rode away to follow in the footsteps of his Ineos Grenadiers teammate Geraint Thomas who won this stage in 2018.

Elsewhere, Tadej Pogacar tried to attack Jonas Vingegaard as they followed the breakaway up the road, but two attempts failed to bring the Slovenian any closer to the Dane in the GC standings and he’ll have to reassess his strategy going into today’s 192.6km route.

Stage 13 gives the riders a bit of relief after three days of climbing in the Alps with a relatively flat run from Le Bourg D’Oisans to Saint Etienne. It is one of those stages which could be won by a sprinter, puncheur, climber or the breakaway so expect a huge scramble at the start as riders jostle for the best position. It is unlikely to be a stage where a general classification fight breaks out but with Pogacar chasing the yellow jersey he might consider these rolling hills more to his suiting than his Danish rival’s and wish to put that theory to the test.

Follow all the action from Stage 13 of the Tour de France 2022:

Tour de France - Stage 13

  • Today’s 192.6km route sees the race go from Le Bourg D’Oisans to Saint Etienne

  • Six riders racing to win from the breakaway group, Pedersen, Houle and Wright out in front

  • Breakaway riders summit final climb with lead of three minutes 30 seconds

  • Caleb Ewan crashes and injures knee putting an end to his challenge today

  • Wout van Aert heads the peloton through the sprint to add to his lead in the points classification

  • Mads Pedersen takes seven breakaway riders over Col de Parmenie as lead extends over two minutes

  • Filippo Ganna charges away over Cote de Brie to set up the breakaway

Tour de France 2022: Mads Pedersen wins Stage 13!

16:41 , Michael Jones

Wout van Aert is the first man from the peloton to cross the finish line and he collects a few more points to add to his green jersey tally.

No fights between the GC contenders today means that Jonas Vingegaard holds on to the yellow jersey ahead of Tadej Pogacar and Geraint Thomas.

Tour de France 2022: Mads Pedersen wins Stage 13!

16:33 , Michael Jones

Mads Pedersen takes the win on the 13th stage of the Tour de France.

What a display from the Trek–Segafredo man. Right for the start of the day he knew he wanted to get into the breakaway and when that was achieved he was helped ably by teammate Quinn Simmons.

Over the final kilometres Pedersen was the most relaxed and he timed his final two attacks perfectly to come home with the stage victory.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:31 , Michael Jones

500m to go: There’s a little rise up to the finish, Hugo Houle is out in front, Mads Pedersen is looking around, getting ready to make his move...

... at 300m to go Pedersen bombs away, Fred Wright responds, will he catch him?

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:30 , Michael Jones

1.5km to go: Fred Wright eases up and tries to conserve some energy for the final sprint to the line. I think all three riders realise they can’t get away from each other.

Mads Pedersen should have the advantage in a straight out sprint.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:28 , Michael Jones

3km to go: Fred Wright has a dart three kilometres from hom but he can’t shake either of his companions and Mads Pedersen moves back to the head of the trio.

There’ll be more attacks over these final kilometres.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:26 , Michael Jones

4.5km to go: 26 seconds is enough for this trio to maintain their advantage. They switching places at the front with an unspoken agreement.

One of these riders is going to win Stage 13.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:25 , Michael Jones

6km to go: Mads Pedersen is in full control of this leading group now. The gap between them and the three chasers is up to 25 seconds and Pedersen has the head.

Wright and Houle need to come up with a plan of action to upset Pedersen if they want to win the stage.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:23 , Michael Jones

7.5km to go: Hugo Houle makes an attack up the climb and tries to get clear of Mads Pedersen but the Dane sticks with him without too much trouble.

Houle looks around and sees Pedersen right on his wheel before giving up the attack. Fred Wright keeps up the pace as well.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:21 , Michael Jones

9km to go: Mads Pedersen takes the head and the leading trio increases the lead over the chasing three. There’s another kilometre or so of climbing to go before the breakaway crests the final climb.

There’s still a bit of intrigue in this race as Houle and Wright need to deal with Pedersen before the sprint finish.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:18 , Michael Jones

10km to go: The attack from Pedersen has split the breakaway group into two. Pedersen, Houle and Wright are in the first group with Ganna, Jorgenson and Kung behind them.

The gap is 15 seconds.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:16 , Michael Jones

12km to go: BikeExchange have given up. Jumbo-Visma and Ineos Grenadiers both overtake these riders and set the pace at the top of the peloton.

Mads Pedersen takes a big swing and goes for it! He knows the others in the breakaway are going to try to leave him behind so decides to attack himself.

He flies out in front but there’s a response. Fred Wright and Hugo Houle catch him up.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:14 , Michael Jones

14km to go: The six leaders have added to their lead again. They’re not going to be caught and it’ll come down to one of Stefan Kung, Matteo Jorgenson, Filippo Ganna, Mads Pedersen, Hugo Houle and Fred Wright as to who will win this stage.

BikeExchange’s chasing effort seems to have come to an end.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:05 , Michael Jones

19km to go: BikeExchange are starting to earn their rewards. They’ve taken 10 seconds off the time gap but they’re going to have to work all the way to the finish now and hope things fall in their favour.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:03 , Michael Jones

21km to go: For all of BikeExchange’s efforts at the front of the peloton they haven’t been able to close the time gap on the breakaway. They’re in for a penny now though and have to see this chase through to the end.

Their hopes lie with how the breakaway deal with the finish. Tactics and trickery could come into play which may slow down the front six.

The gap remains at 2’20”.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

16:00 , Michael Jones

24km to go: Mads Pedersen knows that this breakaway is thinking about leaving him behind. He’s sticking to the wheel of Filippo Ganna and seems to be pacing himself off the Ineos Grenadiers rider.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:56 , Michael Jones

27km to go: Five of the six leaders will now be thinking about how to deal with Mads Pedersen. If this stage comes down to a sprint between the six men out front Pedersen should comfortably take the victory.

There’ll be thoughts and maybe even discussions about trying to drop the Dane as soon as possible.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:53 , Michael Jones

30km to go: The kilometres are flying by as the breakaway continue their descent. When they reach the plataeu there’s another steady sloping incline before a final downhill section in the last 5-8km. That’ll be a perfect place for a sprint finish.

Stefan Kung is the one to make the first attack from the breakaway.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:49 , Michael Jones

35km to go: BikeExchange are getting no help in driving the peloton forward with Ineos Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma happy to sit behind them and stay in touch.

They’re doing a decent job though and have almost cut the gap to the breakaway by 30 seconds. Have they left it too late though?

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:44 , Michael Jones

39km to go: BikeExchange have shuffled to the front of the peloton and are giving chase to the breakaway which has caused a response from the riders out front.

Stefan Kung (Groupama–FDJ), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), Hugo Houle (Israel–Premier Tech) and Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) are the men in the break.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:38 , Michael Jones

43km to go: This stage should come down to the tactics between the six leading riders now. They have a lead of over 3’30” with the GC teams blocking the way at the front of the peloton to keep the pace slow and steady.

It’ll be difficult for any team to catch them now.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:35 , Michael Jones

44km to go: Quinn Simmons has put in a shift to keep Mads Pedersen in contention in the breakaway and is now feeling the effects of that run and starts slipping back.

There are only six riders in the leading pack now and they’re pushing their lead over three minutes.

Mads Pedersen takes the three KOM points by reaching the top of the climb first.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:31 , Michael Jones

46km to go: Here comes Jumbo-Visma. They’ve had a quiet day in the peloton but move up to the head of the bunch just behind a couple of Alpecin riders. What do they have planned for the final sections of this stage.

Geraint Thomas and Jonas Vingegaard look over to each other and seemingly come to an accord. They ease up the pace and are going to let the breakaway go.

It’ll be one of the seven riders out front who’ll take the victory. 2km of the climb to go.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:26 , Michael Jones

48km to go: Caleb Ewan has given up the chase. He worked hard to get back into contention but the climb has done for him. He tries to stand up on the bike and puts pressure on his knee whcih almost buckles. He knows he won’t be able to catch up now.

4.5km of the climb to go.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:23 , Michael Jones

50km to go: The leading seven riders reach the bottom of Cote de Saint-Romain-en-Gal. It’s a 6.6km climb with a steady 4.5% gradient.

Elsewhere Victor Lafay has abandoned the tour. He’s been trailing at the back of the race for the last few days and now has called it a day.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:21 , Michael Jones

52km to go: The gap between the breakaway and the yellow jersey is hovering at around two minutes. The wind has picked up again near the top of the Cote de Saint-Romain-en-Gal.

Positioning will be key going into the final 44km after reaching the peak of the last category climb.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:15 , Michael Jones

56km to go: Caleb Ewan is still 45seconds off the back of the peloton as they close in on the climb. It will be adding insult to injury if he has to continue to chase them up the hill.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:12 , Michael Jones

60km to go: There’s some interesting stories developing now. Caleb Ewan is trying to get back to the front of the peloton and give himself enough time to recover before a potential sprint finish.

Quick step Alpha-Vinyl and Alpecin continue to set a nippy pace at the front of the peloton but the gap between them and the breakaway is over two minutes.

Crosswinds are causing splits in the peloton and the leaders are closing in on the final climb of the stage.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:05 , Michael Jones

65km to go: Caleb Ewan is 3’41” behind the breakaway and around 1’30” away from the front of the peloton. He’s using the slipstreams of the convoy cars to his advantage as he tries to make his way back up the field.

The winds cause yet another split in the peloton which could play into Ewan’s favour.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:02 , Michael Jones

68km to go: That’s a big blow to Lotto-Soudal who’ve been up at the front of the peloton for most of the day controlling the pace. Three of Ewan’s teammates drop back to help him out as he gets back on the bike to chase down the peloton.

With Lotto out of the front of the peloton the advantage in the stage goes back to the riders in the breakaway.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

15:00 , Michael Jones

70km to go: Crash! That’s a big one. Caleb Ewan seems to lock up and hit the back wheel of one of his teammates as they attempt to get around a corner.

Ewan hits the deck and immediately clutches his knee. He looks to be in a bit of pain as he hobbles off to the side of the road.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:58 , Michael Jones

73km to go: The gap stretches to 2’30” between the breakaway and the peloton which is the biggest it’s been today.

The leaders are on a fairly narrow country road, where Fred Wright is picking up some refreshments from his team car.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:47 , Michael Jones

81km to go: The peloton has split into three big groups which could cause some problems for the GC contenders if they’ve been caught out in the wrong one.

Wout van Aert is definitely in the third group but it looks as though the GC riders are positioned in the first one so there’s no panic for them.

The breakaway has a lead of 1’38” to the yellow jersey.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:42 , Michael Jones

84km to go: The breakaway group are about to hit another uncategorised hill before a long descent to the base of Cote de Saint-Romain-en-Gal which is the final category climb of the stage.

The winds continue to hit the peloton and another split occurs.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:39 , Michael Jones

86km to go: Intermediate sprint result at Côte-Saint-André:

1. Mads Pedersen, 20 pts

2. Filippo Ganna, 17 pts

3. Hugo Houle, 15 pts

4. Quinn Simmons, 13 pts

5. Fred Wright, 11 pts

6. Stefan Küng, 10 pts

7. Matteo Jorgenson, 9 pts

8. Wout van Aert, 8 pts

9. Christophe Laporte, 7 pts

10. Edward Planckaert, 6 pts

11. Philippe Gilbert, 5 pts

12. Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, 4 pts

13. Brent Van Moer, 3 pts

14. Frederik Frison, 2 pts

15. Florian Vermeersch, 1 pt

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:35 , Michael Jones

90km to go: Wout van Aert, in the green jersey, makes his way through to the front of the peloton and pushes clear to take the maximum points left on offer for the intermediate sprint.

He should add eight to his tally after crossing the line behind the leading seven riders in the breakaway.

Mads Pedersen crossed the line first and took the full tally.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:31 , Michael Jones

91km to go: Fabio Jakobsen has caught up with the back of the peloton which is good news of Quick Step Alpha-Vinyl. This Tour de France has been run at a crazily quick pace and today is no exception.

There have been a few moments where riders have been able to conserve some energy but overall they’ve been flying.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:27 , Michael Jones

94km to go: Alpecin are still driving the front of the peloton and they look very determined to catch the breakaway. The winds have caused a bit of havoc with the peloton so the team seems to be taking the chance to reel in the seven riders out front.

3km or so to go until the intermediate sprint.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:23 , Michael Jones

97km to go: Fabio Jakobsen is struggling once again. He’s dropped off the back of the peloton with Victor Lafay after being hit by another crosswind.

The gap between the breakaway and the peloton is now only 1’35”. It seems as though there’s going to be a push to catch the leaders.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:17 , Michael Jones

101km to go: The splits in the peloton didn’t last too long as the wind direction changes allowing the riders to bunch together once again.

Any nerves from those being dropped will have eased.

This increased pace has gained some time on the breakaway too. The time gap is now back under two minutes.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:15 , Michael Jones

104km to go: A crosswind has hit the peloton and as such some riders have dropped off the back including Peter Sagan and Anthony Perez.

There’s another split as Alpecin and Lotto-Soudal speed up at the front almost cutting the peloton in half. The yellow jersey holder, Jonas Vingegaard, is in the front part.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:10 , Michael Jones

108km to go: There is now a flat run of 70km or so with one or two small hills on the way. At La Cote-Saint-Andre is the intermediate sprint which is the next section of stage 13.

Will the breakaway still be leading when they reach it?

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

14:05 , Michael Jones

113km to go: Mads Pedersen takes five KOM points by cresting Col de Parmenie at the front of the seven breakaway riders. It was an uncontested victory for the Dane as the rest of the men in the break have other goals on their mind for today.

Mainly a stage win.

Stefan Küng takes three points, Filippo Ganna two and Quinn Simmons one.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:59 , Michael Jones

115km to go: 2km of Col de Parmenie to go, the breakaway have regained their lead of over two minutes.

Fillippo Ganna takes his turn at the front of the lead riders who seem to have settled into a nice rhythm with each other.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:55 , Michael Jones

116km to go: Quinn Simmons has been very active in the leading group and is being ably back up by Mads Pedersen who must be one of the favourites to take this stage should the breakaway hold on to the end.

Up the climb these seven riders have managed to increase their lead by another 18 seconds. They’re 1’48” ahead now.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:52 , Michael Jones

118km to go: Col de Parmenie is a 5.1km climb with an average gradient of 6.6% but there are some seriously steep sections to this hill.

The seven leaders are 1’30’’ ahead of the peloton which is being led by Lotto-Soudal’s Philippe Gilbert.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:46 , Michael Jones

119km to go: Hugo Houle spoke about his plans for today’s race this morning saying that he is prepared to make it into the breakaway for stage 13.

He said: “Yeah, I wish I can go up the road today. I feel pretty good so far, the last few stages were good, I could manage it pretty well.

“The stages coming up are really good, I hope I can find a good way to go up the road and try to win a stage.

“The fitness is there, I just need to be opportunist and see how the race goes. The sprinters are also in the mix, we have to see at the start how certain teams play, but I will be there and keep my eyes open to jump in.”

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:44 , Michael Jones

122km to go: The peloton continue to chip away at the time between them and the break. It’s not an easy race to judge as the pace is still up around 50km/h so there hasn’t been any slacking off in effort.

The next climb is just 4km away now and that could be a marker of what the chasing teams are thinking. They’ll be happy with the time gap as it stands.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:38 , Michael Jones

126km to go: Matteo Jorgenson has caught back up with the other six riders in the breakaway. Col de Parmenie is about eight kilometres away.

The pace of the peloton has slightly increased and they managed to bring the gap under two minutes.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:33 , Michael Jones

129km to go: Matteo Jorgenson has a flat tyre and needs to switch it out. The rest of the breakaway ploughs on ahead and he’s got a bit of work to do to rejoin them.

He’s got plenty of time to do so as the peloton is over two minutes back now.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:31 , Michael Jones

131km to go: The next obstacle on this stage is Col de Parménie.

It has been categorized four times in the history of the Tour de France: in 1981, 1986, 1999 and 2008 and the very first rider at the top was Bernard Thévenet, the Tour de France winner in 1975 and 1977, in his final year as a pro.

Spain’s Carlos Barredo was the last KOM winner at Col de Parménie 14 years ago.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:29 , Michael Jones

133km to go: The early movement and decent number of riders in the breakaway (seven) means that the stage is up for one of two possible finishes.

Can the breakaway group lead to the end of the stage or will the teams in the peloton give chase to set up a sprint finish?

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:22 , Michael Jones

138km to go: Owen Doull is finding it hard work to catch the breakaway and will more than likely be reeled in by the peloton.

Fabio Jakobsen has caught back up with the group too.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:18 , Michael Jones

140km to go: Very solid work from Mads Pedersen, Hugo Houle, Quinn Simmons, and Fred Wright who have hunted down the leaders and caught the leading three.

Owen Doull is still trying to join them.

The gap between them and the yellow jersey is up to 50”. This could be the break of the day now, there are plenty of riders up front to control and set the pace.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:16 , Michael Jones

143km to go: Another attack to chase down the breakaway trio is launched from the front od the peloton. Houle, Wright, Simmons and Pedersen are involved in this group.

Fabio Jakobsen is feeling it. He’s dropped off the back of the peloton for an unknown reason and team Quick-Step Alpha-Vinyl will want him to recover in case this stage needs to be decided by a sprint finish.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:10 , Michael Jones

147km to go: What an effort from Alpecin-Deceuninck who have closed the gap on the 20 riders chasing down the leaders. The peloton is now just 20 seconds back.

This part of the stage is a long stretch of flat racing before the next climb which starts about 30km from here.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:08 , Michael Jones

150km to go: The Alpecin-Deceuninck team have manoeuvred themselve to the front of the peloton and are setting the chasing pace.

They are currently 37” behind the three riders in the breakaway. The average pace of the race is 53km/h after just over 40km of riding.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

13:04 , Michael Jones

152km to go: Marc Soler, Patrick Konrad, Nils Politt, Mattia Cattaneo, Mikkel Honoré, Pierre-Luc Perichon, Damiano Caruso, Fred Wright, Chris Hamilton, Andreas Leknessund, Alberto Bettiol, Andreas Kron, Mads Pedersen, Bauke Mollema, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Hugo Houle, Krists Neilands, Nick Schultz, and Luca Mozzato are the 20 riders pursuing the three leaders.

If they can catch the breakaway that grouping could be strong enough to lead all the way to the finish.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:58 , Michael Jones

158km to go: The three leaders have moved 15 seconds or so ahead of a pack of chasers who have left the front of the peloton. There’s quite a bit of action happening at the front of the race.

In the peloton Jumbo-Visma have moved to the top of pack and are trying to control the race from there.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:54 , Michael Jones

161km to go: Perichon, Pedersen and Mozzato are reigned back into the peloton as another attack is launched. Filippo Ganna, Stefan Küng and Matteo Jorgenson push ahead.

Ganna crosses the peak of Cote de Brie first and takes the two KOM points onf offer, Kung follows him and earns himself a point as well.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:50 , Michael Jones

163km to go: Danny Van Poppel and Taco Van Der Hoorn start to slip away from the break on the first climb after just one kilometre.

There are now only three riders at the front which should make it easier for the peloton to close that gap.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:48 , Michael Jones

164km to go: Five riders, Pierre-Luc Perichon, Mads Pedersen, Taco Van Der Hoorn, Luca Mozzato, and Danny Van Poppel open up a lead of 20 seconds on the peloton and hit the base of Cote de Brie.

It’s a 2.4km climb with an average gradient of 6.9%.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:45 , Michael Jones

165km to go: The front of the peloton is very active and the breakaway group has been reeled back in as the riders approach the first hill climb of the stage.

Taco Van Der Hoorn and Mads Pedersen seem intent on making the breakaway today as they hover near the front but the peloton is travelling around 60km/h which makes it extremely difficult to get away.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:42 , Michael Jones

170km to go: There are a few more riders pulling across to the breakaway now. The Eurosport commentary time reckons that a lead of 30 seconds will be decent enough to keep them ahead over the first categorised climb.

Peter Sagan is one of the riders attempting to catch up with the breakaway.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:38 , Michael Jones

173km to go: There is a breakaway! Five riders, Nils Politt, Matis Louvel, Taco Van Der Hoorn, Kamil Gradek, and Jeremy Lecroq have opened up a 10 second lead on the rest of the peloton.

They’ve got some work to do to increase that though as the first climb of the day will arrive in about 10 minutes time at the pace they’re going.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:32 , Michael Jones

178km to go: Bahrain Victorious’ Kamil Gradek has a dart to make a breakaway and heads out in front of the peloton. There are a few riders chasing him down but we’ll have to see if this attack pays off.

Gradek is travelling well. He’s up to 70km/h as the group hits the start of the downhill section.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:30 , Michael Jones

181km to go: There were some relaxed looks from the jersey wearers this morning before the stage kicked off. Will any of them make a move to win today?

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:27 , Michael Jones

184km to go: The pace is full on as the riders bunch back up together. The peloton hasn’t let the first skirmish get away as Stefan Kung moves to the front of the field and makes a move to get clear.

He’s out on his own though and doesn’t look to be pushing that hard.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:22 , Michael Jones

190km to go: Already there’s a group of around 15 riders with a slight lead ahead of the rest of the peloton. It’s not a huge lead yet but this early move could be essential as the riders get to grips with their tired legs following three days of riding.

There are a couple of Ineos Grenadiers in the front. Luke Rowe and Filippo Ganna are among the riders trying to go clear.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13

12:19 , Michael Jones

193km to go: Here we go.

Mads Pedersen sprints away as the race gets underway and immediately the peloton begins to snake out behind him. The first few kilometres could be key today.

It’s flat for around five kilometres before the route starts to descend.

The riders are off, they’ll have a steady 3.5km before the départ réel.

After that the stage starts downhill and it is expected that a fair few riders will attempt to make the breakaway before staying out in front for the rest of the day.

France’s Warren Barguil became the latest rider to pull out of the Tour de France after testing positive for Covid-19.

Barguil is the sixth rider to leave the race due to a positive test for the virus since the start on 1st July.

“Our seven other riders have all tested negative,” Arkea-Samsic wrote on Twitter. “Thank you for everything [Warren].”

Barguil becomes the 18th rider to leave this year’s Tour, for one reason or another, leaving 158 riders in the peloton.

Who will win today’s stage?

The data suggests that Wout van Aert has all the skill to take a win but he’ll be up against a stern test from Michael Matthews who is yet to win a stage at this year’s tour and will want to rectify that.

Tom Pidcock is the 15th British stage winner at the Tour de France.

All newcomers on that list in the past 25 years have won more than one stage: Chris Boardman (3), David Millar (4), Mark Cavendish (34), Bradley Wiggins (2), Chris Froome (7) Stephen Cummings (2), Geraint Thomas (3), and Simon Yates (2).

Pidcock said yesterday that he has more ambitions in the Tour de France than just a stage win.

The distinctive jersey wearers for Stage 13 are Jonas Vingegaard (yellow), Wout van Aert (green), Simon Geschke (polka dot) and Tadej Pogacar (white).

There were no changes in Stage 12 despite 60 KOM points up for grabs as Simon Geschke held on to the polka dot jersey for the time being.

Wout van Aert collected a few more points in the sprinters classification and has a commanding lead over his nearest rival Fabio Jakobsen.

Pogacar wears the white jersey for best young rider of the tour but he’ll have thoughts of recovering the yellow jersey from Vingegaard who holds onto it for a second consecutive stage.

Tour de France 2022: Tadej Pogacar wants ‘revenge’ after losing yellow jersey to Jonas Vingegaard

11:45 , Michael Jones

Tadej Pocagar has promised revenge after ceding the Tour de France yellow jersey to Jonas Vingegaard on Wednesday as the two-time defending champion endured a brutal day on the slopes of Col du Granon in the Alps on the 11th stage.

Slovenian Pogacar, whose UAE Emirates team has been weakened after two riders pulled out of the race with Covid-19, looked unbreakable in the first block of racing but cracked after being attacked relentlessly by the Jumbo-Visma team of 25-year-old Dane Vingegaard, last year’s runner-up.

Vingegaard attacked 4.9km from the finish to drop Pogacar, who crossed the line two minutes and 51 seconds behind the new yellow jersey holder.

The 2022 Tour de France begins in Copenhagen on Friday 1 July and finishes in Paris on Sunday 24 July, where Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar hopes to be wearing yellow and be crowned champion for the third year in a row.

Standing in his way is the sheer strength and depth of Dutch team Jumbo-Visma, who carry multiple threats including Pogacar’s national teammate Primoz Roglic and last year’s Tour runner-up, Jonas Vingegaard. Ineos Grenadiers are without their leading light Egan Bernal, the 2019 champion who is still recovering from injury, but they do have the in-form Geraint Thomas fresh from winning the Tour de Suisse, as well as potential stage winners Adam Yates and Tom Pidcock.

Here is a stage-by-stage look at this year’s route.

Alexis Gougeard says that his AG2R Citroën Team are prepared to attack the next three days after conserving energy over the Alps. Speaking ahead of today’s star he said:

“The legs are good, we managed in the Alps as best as we could. We saved energy to attack in the next three days.”

Australian Caleb Ewan echoed his thoughts adding: “Everyone is tired after the Alps. There are not many opportunities to win a stage on the Tour de France, so we have to take the opportunities we have. We have a plan for today.”

Tour de France 2022: Tom Pidcock wins historic Alpe d’Huez Tour de France stage as Jonas Vingegaard holds off Tadej Pogacar

Tom Pidcock became the youngest ever winner of a Tour de France stage on the Alpe d’Huez ahead of a rejuvenated Chris Froome while Jonas Vingegaard defended his new status as race leader as one of cycling’s most famous climbs once again delivered drama.

Pidcock’s first ever WorldTour win was a spectacular one amid the rowdy crowds of this stunning sporting arena, with the 22-year-old riding away from Louis Meintjes and Froome, who enjoyed his best day on a bike since the horror crash in 2019 which threatened to end his glittering career.

Behind, Tadej Pogacar tried to attack Vingegaard 24 hours after losing the yellow jersey to the Dane, but his late digs did nothing to shake the Jumbo-Visma man and the pair came home together with Geraint Thomas on their wheel, Romain Bardet distanced to lose second place overall.

Tour de France 2022: Stage 13 preview

Stage 13 of the 2022 Tour de France sees the riders who have made it this far earn a whiff of relief after some brutal days in the Alps, and following three days in the mountains, the riders move one eye towards the final week of this year’s Tour de France.

The two ascents of the Col du Galibier and the mountain top finish of Alpe d’Huez will have left the entire peloton on its knees heading into stage 13, so this appears to be the perfect day for a big break to go away in much the same way as the 25-man group went up the road on Tuesday.

There are a host of teams still left in the race who are chasing a stage victory, so there will be an almighty scramble at the start of the day to get into the break. It is one of those stages across the three weeks which could be one by a sprinter, puncheur, climber or the breakaway, and that’s what makes it so intriguing.

Follow all the latest updates from Stage 13 of the Tour de France, as the riders leave behind the Alps and settle into a long run across rolling hills as they journey from Le Bourg D’Oisans to Saint Etienne.

Tom Pidcock will be flying high after his historic victory on the Alpe d’Huez yesterday but Tadej Pogacar will have his eyes on recovering the yellow jersey that he lost to Jonas Vingegaard after stage 11. The longer, flatter route should suit the Slovenian after he was unable to successfully attack Vingegaard on yesterday’s final climb.

But, there are still a few teams searching for a stage win at this year’s tour and with the riders shattered from three days of climbing they may decide that today’s route offers the best chance of victory. Expect a lot of action early on as those hoping for victory attempt to get into a breakaway but it may come down to the GC riders once again as they decide whether to exert energy chasing a stage win.
