The Tour de France 2022 winds down today after the fireworks between Jonas Vingegaard and defending champion Tadej Pogacar throughout Stage 17 and 18, leaving the Dane poised to snatch victory and a maiden Grand Tour title. There is just the flat stage today from Castelnau Magnoac to Cahors, Saturday’s time trial and Sunday’s ceremonial ride to the Champs-Élysées.

The Jumbo-Visma leader conquered Hautacam and now simply has to avoid disaster to triumph on cycling’s biggest stage. The sprinters still have a chance at glory themselves, in a wide-open Stage 19, Jasper Philipsen, Wout van Aert, Fabio Jakobsen and Caleb Ewan will all fancy their chances across 188km.

“It’s incredible,” Vingegaard said after stretching his lead to three minutes 26 seconds, while Geraint Thomas looks primed for a podium spot and is four minutes 34 seconds further behind, with a cushion of three minutes five seconds to David Gaudu in fourth. “This morning I said to my girlfriend and my daughter I wanted to win for them and I did. I’m really happy and proud. This one is for my two girls at home. I was just happy that it finally ended. It was incredibly hard. Of course I am incredibly happy that I won the stage. There are two more days to come until we are in Paris and we must stay focused.” Follow all the latest action from stage 19 below.

7km to go: Wout van Aert has moved to the top of the peloton and seems to be thinking about safety first. He’s setting a steady pace for Jonas Vingegaard to marshall him to the 3km mark where the yellow jersey holde won’t lose any time in the GC.

10km to go: Inside the final 10km and the gap to the leading trio is just 20 seconds. That’s a long way to go with such a narrow lead. Wright, Stuyven, and Gougeard are giving it their all but they won’t be able to get to the end.

There’s going to be a sprint finish.

15km to go: Jasper Philipsen, Wout van Aert and Peter Sagan are sat about five or six riders off the front of the peloton and could be in the perfect places to launch a sprint for the line.

20km to go: The teams with hopes to win this stage will be starting to get a little nervous about the three front runners. Wright, Stuyven, and Gougeard are working well together and seem determined to stay out in front.

TotalEnergies’ Peter Sagan has joined his team mates at the head of the peloton and seems to be issuing a bit of encouragement. They may want to make a play for the stage win.

25km to go: The leading trio have opened up a 31 second lead on the peloton but that seems to be dropping as the descent begins to plateau.

At the front of the peloton the teams are starting to think about positioning. They’ll want to get their sprinters to the forefront.

30km to go: Fred Wright, Jasper Stuyven, and Alexis Gougeard have decided that the time is right for another attack off the front of the peloton.

They’ve managed to open up a gap on 20 seconds but you feel that needs to increase if they’re going to get all the way to the line.

35km to go: Rather bizarrely Quinn Simmons seems to be fully enjoying yet simultaneously hating the final climb up Cote de Saint-Daunes.

He’s cheered on by the watching crowds and takes the final KOM point.

His lead over the peloton is eight seconds as Wout van Aert leads them over the line just behind him.

48km to go: Simmons has dropped Mohoric! Does the young American believe he can win this stage with a solo ride? He’s giving it a good go at the head of the race.

The three pursuers seem to be content to get reigned back into the peloton.

50km to go: It’s an interesting move from Simmons to attack from the breakaway. If these rider had hopes of winning the stage they would need as many legs helping set the pace as possible but now it’s just Simmons and Mohoric.

Maybe that will be enough. They’ve extended their lead on the peloton back to 54 seconds but 50km is a long way to go.

52km to go: Movement! Quinn Simmons bombs away from the other three riders in the breakaway to try and win the KOM point on offer at the top of the climb.

58km to go: This stage looks to be setting up a sprint finish. The two category climbs are not overly difficult today and as long as the sprinters stay near the front of the peloton they should be well positioned for the run into Cahors later on.

The four riders in the breakaway are just about to hit the climb at Cote de la Cite Medievale de Lauzerte.

75km to go: Breakaway rider Matej Mohoric is determined to finish with a stage win after a difficult Tour so far. He spoke to reporters this morning saying:

“I wasn’t at my best during this Tour, but I’m getting better. The worst was the first week for me, I must have caught an infection or whatever. But yeah, I’m starting to feel better now, and there’s always hope, you know.

“One last chance and let’s see how it plays out. Although I do think there’s a slim chance that the breakaway will make it, because there’s many sprint teams who are actually willing to control the race.“You need to believe, you know. It’s not over until it’s over. There’s always a chance, even if it’s slim, and you can’t give up. Especially knowing what happened last year, which was also supposed to be a sprint stage, but in the end it proved not to be.”

80km to go: The leading quartet have a about a 700 metre lead ahead of the peloton which works out at around 50 seconds. There are still close to 30km of flat riding to traverse before the first of today’s two category 4 climbs.

If they want to the peloton will reel in this group well before then.

87km to go: Despite the rather sedate looking nature to today’s ride, and as has been the case for most of the Tour de France so far, the riders are currently on pace to arrive five minutes before the predicted fastest arrival time.

This has been a Tour like no other with the cyclists putting themselves through some gruelling paces.

The latest suggests the crosswinds will emerge as a pivotal factor in today's Stage 19.

Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels) has been at the centre of the stage so far, attempting to bridge the gap to the breakaway.

This five-man group has a gap of 48 seconds: Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe); Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo); Taco Van der Hoorn (Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert); Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious);Mikkel Honoré (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl).

Barthe is unsuccessful and swallowed up by the peloton.

There are 115km to go.

Tour de France 2022 Stage 19 preview

13:09 , Jack Rathborn

The 2022 Tour de France moves into Castelnau-Magnoac with the sprinters eyeing up glory in Stage 19 with just two fourth-category climbs to contend with.

The day finishes in Cahors, which is a nice omen for Jonas Vingegaard, as the Danish royal family own the castle of Cayx in this town. The Jumbo-Visma star broke Tadej Pogacar during Stage 18 to claim a memorable victory and has all but wrapped up the battle for the yellow jersey after a sensational Tour.

There is unlikely to be any opportunity for Pogacar to hurt Vingegaard here, though who would rule out a few attacks in an effort to make something happen and finally dislodge his rival. Unless the Dane is sleeping on the job, any attack is unlikely to come off on what is such a flat route.

The potential for crosswinds could boost hopes for those ready to bide their time and strike late. Jasper Philipsen is the favourite here, but who can count out the incredible Wout van Aert, while Fabio Jakobsen and Caleb Ewan are also in the running after battling their way through the Alps and Pyrenees for their shot at the stage and the finale in Paris on Sunday.
