Follow live updates from the Tour de France with stage 17 in the Pyrenees mountains set to host a crucial battle between yellow jersey wearer Jonas Vingegaard and the defending champion Tadej Pogacar.

A short but brutal 130km route from Saint-Gaudens to Peyragudes will offer more encouragement for Pogacar and the other general classification contenders. The 23-year-old stayed true to his word by attacking Vingegaard early on Tuesday’s stage from Carcassonne to Foix, but the overall leader was able mark his rival and protect his advantage of two minutes and 22 seconds in the standings.

That could all change in an instant, however, and with time running out in the race to Paris the four categorised climbs here and final ascent of Peyragudes could potentially host a battle for crucial yellow jersey seconds at the finish. While Vingegaard was hit by losing key team-mates Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk on Sunday, Pogacar was also dealt the blow of Marc Soler dropping out due to illness. Meanwhile, Geraint Thomas remains in contention but will need to pick his moment for an attack with Vingegaard and Pogacar locked in their own duel.

Tadej Pogacar wins stage 17

15:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

Geraint Thomas crosses the line fourth, behind third-place McNulty, and he has proved himself consistently the third strongest rider on this Tour.

A third podium of his Tour de France career is on the cards: Thomas already has a first and second place finish on his palmares, of course.

Tadej Pogacar wins stage 17

15:54 , Lawrence Ostlere

That was a fantastic finale. Pogacar looked like he didn’t have anything left as he slowed before the finish, falling back behind Vingeaard momentarily, but wow, he produced an extraoardinary burst which Vingegaard couldn’t match.

That’s the second time on this Tour that Pogacar has outsprinted Vingegaard on a summit finish. It only gains him a few seconds in the general classification, and the Dane retains yellow, but that was a big win for the reigning champion trying to wrestle back the jersey.

Tadej Pogacar wins stage 17!

15:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

Pogacar tacks on to the wheel of Vingegaard and then slings his bike wide and fires down the inside. He gets himself in front and the yellow jersey can’t respond. Pogacar raises his arms aloft as he crosses the line, with Vingegaard’s head collapsing on to his bars behind. Wow wow wow.

500m to go: Still McNulty leading Vingegaard leading Pogacar – a tense finale! The road is starting to flatten out for a sprint finish. Who will land the pyschological blow here?

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:45 , Lawrence Ostlere

1km to go: This brilliant ride by the young American McNulty has won him today’s combativity award, no surprise there, and he will wear the red bib tomorrow. He continues to grind up the road with Pogacar and Vingegaard in close attendance – Vingegaard suddenly leapfrogs Pogacar into the second wheel, a sign that he is feeling good and wants the stage win.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

1.5km to go: Brandon McNulty still leads the way, might he actually win this stage? If Vingegaard does, that will surely be that for this Tour de France.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

2km to go: Pogacar takes a big slurp of liquid as McNulty pours a drink over his head. It’s been a brilliant front-foot assault on the stage by UAE Emirates, and they’ve blown the race apart, but one man remains glued to their wheels and it’s the yellow jersey they so want to crack, Jonas Vingegaard.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:40 , Lawrence Ostlere

3km to go: No change at the head of the race as these three continue to grind into the sky, with fans screaming them on from both sides of the road.

Thomas is putting a few metres between himself and Bardet back down the mountain.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:36 , Lawrence Ostlere

4km to go: I don’t get the impression Pogacar feels he has it in his legs to hurt Vingegaard here. The Dane looks the most comfortable of the front three, and McNulty is actually starting to grimace a little.

About a minute and a half back down the road, Thomas and Bardet are trying to give chase, or at least limit their losses.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

5km to go: The road is starting to tilt up en route to the Peyragudes summit finish. Vingegaard and Pogacar both still look comfortable led by UAE Emirates’ McNulty. Will Pogacar launch a full-on assault, or might he simply go for a sprint finish and try to pick up a few bonus seconds and the psychological boost of the stage victory?

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

23km to go: Now then – Sepp Kuss has been dropped. That means there are only four riders left in this yellow-jersey group and Jonas Vingegaard is without any teammates. McNulty continues to pound a hard pace on the front, with Pogacar, Vingegaard and Thomas all in tow.

There are still 3km or so until the summit, as this super-group close in on Leknessund at the front of the race.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

15:00 , Lawrence Ostlere

24km to go: There are still a scattering of riders ahead of this super-strong yellow-jersey group, though they are being picked off one by one. Out front right now is Andreas Leknessund of German team DSM. It’s a bold solo surge on this penultimate climb.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

14:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

26km to go: McNulty continues the hard pace set by Berg and UAE Emirates are absolutely battering the rest of the peloton. Only six riders are left in this yellow-jersey group: McNulty, Pogacar, Vingegaard, Kuss, Thomas and Quintana. And now Quintana is now dropped!

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

14:53 , Jamie Braidwood

27 km to go: Marcus Berg has done his job for Tadej Pogacar and drops away, leaving Brandon McNulty to continue the pace at the front of the GC group. Wout van Aert is dropped too, and there are now only eight or nine riders remaining alongside Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.

34km to go: The two leading riders, Alexey Lutsenko and Thibaut Pinot , have made it down into the valley. Dylan Teuns and Gregor Mühlberger tried to attack from the second breakaway group but were quickly swallowed up on the flat. Lutesnko and Pinot will hit the next climb, the cat 1 Col de Val Louron-Azet, very soon.

42km to go: There is a sheer drop to the left of the road, but Quinn Simmons sets a frightening pace at the head of the second breakaway who are looking to bridge the gap to the two lead-out riders. At around 30 seconds further back, Jonas Vingegaard hangs behind Wout van Aart, ahead of Tadeg Pogacar. Tom Pidcock, who is a brilliant descender, will be looking to make his way back to the yellow jersey group.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

14:29 , Jamie Braidwood

48km to go: Final push to the summit, and it’s Thibaut Pinot who takes the maximum points ahead of Alexey Lutsenko. The main drama is further behind, however, as the polkadot jersey wearer Simon Geschke loses his chain further backs and gets dropped from the secondary group, missing out on the points altogether.

Now we begin the narrow and winding descent down into the valley - it’s a long one too at 13.5km. Lutsenko can be seen shaking out his legs as Pinot sets a comfortable pace.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

14:20 , Lawrence Ostlere

50km to go: Not for long! Now Tom Pidcock has slipped right out of the group and back down the road. This is a brutal pace set by UAE Emirates’ Mikkel Bjerg on the front of the peloton, one of Tadej Pogacar’s few teammates left. Bjerg has pretty much single-handedly closed the gap down to leading duo from two minutes to 1 min 30 sec.

Pinot and Lutsenko are 2km from the summit.

52km to go: Adam Yates slips off the back of the peloton, clearly struggling today. That leaves Tom Pidcock alongside Geraint Thomas in the yellow jersey group for Ineos, who also have Dylan van Baarle up the road.

Pinot and Lutsenko are 4km from the summit of the day’s second climb, the category two Hourquette d’Ancizan (8.2km, 5.1%). A look at what’s to come:

54km to go: Pinot and Lutsenko remain on the front and their advantage over the peloton is now nearly two minutes. UAE and Jumbo-Visma are taking in turns to head the peloton, with Vingegaard, Van Aert and Pogacar all close to the nose, and Geraint Thomas there too.

The chasing pack of 15 or so riders behind Pinot and Lutsenko remain about 30 seconds back.

14:06 , Lawrence Ostlere

56km to go: So Pinot and Lutsenko continue to work together up the road, and they lead the peloton by around 1 min 40 sec.

In between are a couple of chasing groups: the nearest to the front is that pack of about 15 riders featuring the polka dot jersey of Simon Geschke; then we have the duo of Romain Bardet and Jonathan Castroviejo surging off the front of the peloton now too.

63km to go: Pinot and Lutsenko crest the Col d’Aspin and begin the short descent towards the second climb of the day, and the gentlest, the category two Hourquette d’Ancizan (8.2km, 5.1%).

Behind them, the polka dot jersey of Simon Geschke puts in a surge to ensure he picks up a few more King of the Mountains points.

65km to go: There are around 15 riders in between the peloton and the leading duo. They include Ineos duo Dani Martinez and Dylan van Baarle, two from Movistar, two from Cofidis, two from DSM, two from Trek and a handful of others. Notable names include Rigoberto Uran, Dylan Teuns, Simon Geschke, Pierre-Luc Perichon and Quinn Simmons.

66km to go: Pinot (FDJ) and Lutsenko (Astana) have been allowed to gather a lead of almost a minute from the peloton containing the main GC men like Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar and Geraint Thomas. You don’t get a much stronger climbing duo than these two and they are making short work of this first climb of the day.

In between the two groups is a chasing pack – I’ll try and ascertain some names.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

13:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

69km to go: Right, here’s a fresh attack and this one looks very strong. Thibaut Pinot and Alexey Lutsenko are working hard on the front together, and behind them a chasing group has formed off the nose of the peloton. If the chasers can latch on to this leading two then we might have a useful little pack. Still 5km to the summit of Col d’Aspin.

76km to go: Two riders are now out front, Guillaume Boivin (Israel Premier-Tech) and Owain Doull (EF Education), about 30 seconds clear of the peloton.

Doull had that incredibly unfortunate crash riding over a rogue water bottle rolling along the road a few days ago, so it’s nice to see him obviously feeling good, as the Col d’Aspin ascent begins.

80km to go: We are approaching the first climb of the day, the Col d’Aspin. It’s 12km in length at an average 6.5% gradient, plenty enough to take a few prisoners if the pace is high, especially given the road already kicks up before the official start of the ascent.

95km to go: The breakaway breaks down and they all come back together.

The intermediate sprint is not much of a sprint, in the end, as Jasper Philipsen is allowed to scurry off the front and collect the maximum 20 points – I think there’s a decent cash prize for that too. But Wout van Aert is happy to cross the line in third and with it mathematically secure the green jersey this year – he just has to make it to Paris. It will be reward for a fantastic Tour by the multi-talented Dutchman.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

13:00 , Lawrence Ostlere

98km to go: A few more riders have jumped across from the peloton to the breakaway, including Wout van Aert who wants to secure the green jersey once and for all at the intermediate sprint coming shortly.

Van Aert will be a handy companion for Jumbo-Visma teammate Jonas Vingegaard up the road, too, when the Dane wearing the yellow jersey might require a guide down the fast descents.

Tour de France 2022 – stage 17 LIVE

12:56 , Lawrence Ostlere

100km to go: The yellow jersey is clocking over 50km/hr average speed at this early stage, which is quite some pace considering it has been almost exclusively uphill thus far. We are approaching the intermediate sprint, though this stage is still sorting out who exactly will be in the breakaway.

Swift and Van Baarle remain out in front but only by 20 seconds or so, and they surely need a helping hand.

Reminder of the big news this morning, that Pogacar’s key mountain domestique Rafal Majka has abandoned the race. Full story:

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar’s Tour de France challenge suffered a huge blow on Wednesday when his team mate Rafal Majka pulled out of the race due to injury.

“Unfortunately Rafal Majka will not start stage 17 of the Tour de France today,” the UAE Emirates team said in a statement before the 130-km mountain trek to Peyragudes.

Majka has been Pogacar’s key lieutenant in the mountains.

It leaves the young Slovenian, who trails overall leader Jonas Vingegaard by 2:22, with only three team mates for the final days of the Tour. And one of whom - Marc Hirschi - has been struggling throughout and has not been able to provide Pogacar with any help.

“Majka sustained a strain injury to his thigh after some mechanical trouble on stage 16 when his chain broke,” team doctor Adrian Rotunno said.

“This resulted in a high-grade partial thickness tear of his right quadriceps muscle, and unfortunately due to the muscle damage he is unable to ride.”

108km to go: There remain constant attacks and counter-attacks off the front of the peloton as a plethora of riders attempt to escape and challenge for what many teams think could be a successful breakaway all the way to the finish today.

EF Education’s Neilson Powless has been very busy, but the two out in front at the moment right now are Ineos’s Dylan van Baarle and Arkéa-Samsic’s Connor Swift.

Bora-Hansgrohe and Trek-Segafredo are both trying hard to escape up the road too, as are Lotto-Soudal and Bahrain Victorious.

Jonas Vingegaard speaks

12:35 , Lawrence Ostlere

The man in the yellow jersey spoke to ITV this morning:

“I just expect him [Pogacar] to attack everywhere he can, and every opportunity. It’s quite obvious that it’s quite a good moment to attack [on the descents], and I would do the same.

“It’s always at the end of a grand tour you start to feel tired and a bit fatigued, but I still feel good and I just do my best.”

Stage 17 preview

12:26 , Lawrence Ostlere

The categorised climbs culminate atop Peyragudes which could potentially host a battle for crucial yellow jersey seconds at the finish with the likes of Tadej Pogacar, Geraint Thomas and Jonas Vingegaard all determined to lay down a historic stage victory.

The route is almost never flat, with a gradual incline towards an early intermediate sprint at 33km where the man in the green jersey, Wout van Aert, doesn’t need any more points but might race up the road to collect them all the same. From an advanced position he could offer the man in yellow, teammate Jonas Vingegaard, support later in the day on the fastest technical descents.

After the sprint the road tilts up gradually further to the base of the category one Col d’Aspin (12km length, 6.5% gradient), a familiar Tour de France climb which will drain any weary legs and no doubt whittle down the peloton.

A short downhill stretch over the top leads straight into the category two Hourquette d’Ancizan (8.2km, 5.1%), before a long descent towards the day’s penultimate climb, the category one Col de Val Louron-Azet (10.7km, 6.8%).

By this point, on a hot day with three tough climbs completed, there may only be a few hardy souls left able to stick it with the lead group as they approach Peyragudes. The ascent to the finish is another category one road, an 8km drag at 7.8% where whoever wins the stage will be very worthy of doing so.

Reigning champion Pogacar has tried to attack over the past few stages to no avail, and knows he is running out of opportunities to earn back the two and a half minutes he need to win a third successive Tour de France. Vingegaard and his Jumbo-Visma teammates will be ready for another assault from the Slovenian, particularly down the ascents where Pogacar will thrown caution to the wind, and Vingegaard’s job will be difficult but very clear: to not let Pogacar out of his sight.
