Tour de France 2022 LIVE result: Tadej Pogacar wins dramatic stage 7 atop La Planche des Belles Filles

Stage 7 of the 2022 Tour de France brings a familiar sight over recent years as Tadej Pogacar assumes the yellow jersey once more. The Slovenian produced a typically unstoppable assault on stage 6 to win in Longwy and jump to the top of the general classification, and barely a week into the race he already looks on course to win an historic third successive maillot jaune.

If Pogacar is feeling fresh then he could turn the screw again today on what is the first mountain stage of the Tour, finishing atop the now iconic La Planche des Belles Filles where Chris Froome won in 2012 and where Pogacar himself took control of the 2020 race. Key rivals like Geraint Thomas (Ineos) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will hope Pogacar is still feeling the effects of his exertions yesterday as try to challenge his control.

‘The Plank’ gets steeper as it rises towards the finish line, ending on a 24% gradient which will sort the hardy climbers from the rest. It comes after two category three climbs: the Col de Grosse Pierre (3.1km at 6.4%) and Col des Croix (3.2km at 6.3%) and the stage winner will require sharp bike-handling on the descents as well as strong legs on the way up.

An interesting point made by Bradley Wiggins on Eurosport – back a few generations, the yellow jersey would have allowed a rival to take the victory there as an act of courtesy. That doesn’t happen anymore, especially with the bonus seconds available for finishing first. Pogacar was never going to be satisfied with second place.

What a fantastic race that was. They crawled over the line, but Pogacar just had that tiny bit more left in his legs to take victory from his fiercest rival Vingegaard. That was a huge win not necessarily for the GC standings, but pyschologically, to assert his authority at the top of La Planche. Pogacar even had time to give Vingegaard a glance as he passed him, as if to say “can you respond?”, and a devastated Vingegaard just dropped his head as they reached the line.

Vingegaard overtakes Kamna, heartbreakingly, with just about 20 metres left, and Pogacar follows past. The Dane looks to be winning the stage but with just five metres remaining Pogacar hauls himself past his rival to take the victory! Wow, what a finish, and a brilliant win for the yellow jersey.

1km to go: Lennard Kamna has just 1000m to the finish line, though they are brutally steep and the asphalt is shifting to gravel track. He’s so close! The peloton are not getting much closer, still 40 seconds back, all content to follow each other up the road for now.

2km to go: Kamna is digging in and grinding hard as fans step into the road to roar him up La Planche. It looks like he’s going to hang on! The peloton is still 45 seconds back, where the key GC riders have not yet attacked one another. Pogacar, Thomas and Vingegaard all still there near the nose.

2.5km to go: The peloton is shrinking as more and more riders slide off the back as the road steepens and the pain intensifies. The strongest few are closing in on Kamna but I think they are running out of time to stop him from winning this stage 7 – the gap is still around 45 seconds.

3.5km to go: Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) is grinding away at the front still around a minute clear of the GC riders, but this 3.5km is about as brutal as it gets on this Tour, with the steep 24% gradient finish on gravel terrain still to come.

4km to go: UAE Emirates take to the front of the peloton once more and there are three riders dragging Pogacar up the mountain – this is an impressive show of strength from a team often maligned for failing to help their leader. Geraint Thomas sits on Pogacar’s wheel with Jumbo-Visma in close contact too. They are now around a minute fromLennard Kamna, who has powered past Geschke and into the solo lead!

If the winner is to come from this breakaway, who might it be? Durbridge and Barthe have never won grand tour stages before, while the veteran Erviti is more of a punchy time triallist than a climber. Teuns won on La Planche in 2019 so he must be the favourite right now, while Bora riders Schachmann and Kamna both have climbing legs suited for this kind of summit finish.

42km to go: So, the state of play. A seven-man breakaway leads the stage with an advantage of around three minutes from the peloton. The break contains Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious), Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange), Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels), Imanol Erviti (Movistar) and Simon Geschke (Cofidis). Crucially, Schachmann is only two minutes or so down from the yellow jersey of Tadej Pogacar in the general classification, and that has spurred UAE Emirates to keep the pace high in the peloton to ensure they don’t lose yellow at the end of the day.

We are approaching the start of the second categorised climb of the day, the category three Col des Croix (3.2km at 6.3%).

An attack at the front of the breakaway! It feels bold, this. Lennard Kamna leads the way with his Bora teammate Max Schachmann and, I think, Luke Durbridge of BikeExchange. Perhaps they got fed up of some in the break not pulling their weight. They might also have decided this is the only way to shake off the chasing peloton.

Mads Pedersen steps out to the front of the breakaway to collect the majority of the sprint points on offer.

Back in the peloton, Wout van Aert and Fabio Jakobsen shuffle to the nose and fight it out for 11th across the sprint line – but Jakobsen barely tries and Van Aert is able to cruise over. All very odd. Van Aert is already wearing green with a healthy points lead and he has increased it slightly there.

UAE Emirates are working very hard to keep the gap tight to the breakaway, which has not been allowed to grow more than a couple of minutes.

A few thoughts on this breakaway. First of all, Max Schachmann is the highest of the breakers in the general classification, he is 23rd only 2min 07sec behind the yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar, so Pogacar’s UAE Emirates team will be wary of letting this group build up a huge gapthat might threaten his overall lead. That limits the scope of the breakaway and could even set up Pogacar for the stage win later in the day.

Bora-Hansgrohe certainly are in a good position here though, not only threatening the yellow jersey but with two strong climbers who could feasibly win the stage. Elsewhere Dylan Teuns has won on La Planche des Belles Filles before at the Tour, in 2019, when another breaker Giulio Ciccone was in the yellow jersey, so they will have fond memories of today’s final climb. Ciccone, like Schachmann, has a teammate alongside him in this break in Mads Pedersen, who can help him keep the pace high before the final climb.

It is also worth noting that UAE Emirates have their own man in there, in Vegard Stake Laengen, who will do very little work whatsoever on the front I suspect, and will attempt to slow the break to help Pogacar.

125km to go: Filippo Ganna and Simon Geschke are making a little bit of progress, now 20 seconds clear of the bunch.

Ganna is Ineos’s Italian time-trial speciallist who you wouldn’t necessarily tip to win a stage like this one, given the gruelling summit finish to come. But if a bigger breakaway joins him and makes serious headway then Ineos will be happy to have someone up front from a tactical point of view.

Geschke is a more likely stage contender, given his one Tour de France stage victory came on a mountain day, though that was back in 2015 and the 36-year-old has not shown that sort of form for some time.

Jumbo-Visma sporting director Frans Maassen spoke to Eurosport this morning on a range of topics, and hinted they could work with Ineos later in the Tour to unseat Pogacar from the yellow jersey.

On today’s stage: “We think the break will go to the finish, and then a battle between the big stars. We have to follow the big guy in yellow and we're going to try that. I hope [Jumbo leader Jonas Vingegaard can attack today ] but to be honest all the peloton suffered a lot yesterday. It suits him better today and I hope he has the legs to do something.”

On an anti-Pogacar alliance: “Too early to think about that. Maybe later on the Tour it can help to be an ally with Ineos, I don't know, we'll see.”
