Tourist dies after vanishing in surf at popular South Carolina beach, officials say

A missing tourist died after he was pulled from the surf at a popular South Carolina beach, public safety officials told news outlets.

Rescue crews responded Sunday, June 11, after a report of a drowning at the Folly Beach Pier, WCBD reported, citing public safety chief Andrew Gilreath.

The 27-year-old was swimming with others when he went under and didn’t resurface, according to WCIV.

The man, who wasn’t identified, was visiting from China at the time, officials told the station.

Charleston County lifeguards “pulled him from the surf,” WCBD reported. Despite performing CPR, the man died, officials told WCSC.

McClatchy News reached out to the Folly Beach Public Safety Department on June 12 and was awaiting a response.

Authorities didn’t release additional information.

Folly Beach is about 10 miles south of Charleston.
