Tourist from Washington found dead at popular lookout in national park, Utah rangers say

A 63-year-old tourist from Washington died while visiting an overlook at a popular Utah national park, rangers said.

The woman was found unresponsive Monday, Oct. 9, at the Grand View Point Overlook at Canyonlands National Park near Moab, according to the National Park Service.

First responders performed CPR on the woman, but she died at the scene.

Grand View Point is a popular spot to overlook “miles of corrugated canyons” within the Island in the Sky district at the park. Visitors can take a short walk on a paved sidewalk to see one viewpoint.

Then they can hike to a second viewpoint. The less than 2-mile hike takes about 90 minutes and has a 73-foot elevation change.

The National Park Service did not say if the woman was hiking or provide additional details. Authorities and park officials are investigating.

In April, the body of a 48-year-old tourist from Colorado was found in a remote area of Canyonlands, according to previous McClacthy News reporting. A report of an empty vehicle in The Maze district led rangers to find the man’s body.

Canyonlands National Park is near the popular tourist destination of Moab, about 230 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. In 2022, more than 779,000 people visited the park, according to National Park Service data.
