DIVISION I

No. 2 Pinkerton 10

No. 15 Spaulding 0

DERRY – The Astros broke open a 1-0 game with a nine-run sixth inning in this Division I first-round win.

“I think we executed our plan,” said Spaulding coach BJ Gagnon said. “Our plan was to try to limit their runs scored and try to find a way to score two or three runs and see what happens. We did that, but we didn’t execute some of the little things in the bottom of the sixth and it came back to bite us.”

Spaulding senior left-hander Conor Bryant allowed just one run through five innings. Pinkerton’s Lorenzo Corsetto reached on an infield single to lead off the third inning, and scored on an error.

“The score doesn’t show how close it was, for sure,” Gagnon said. “Proud of our guys. They competed. But you’ve got to tip your hat to Pinkerton. They kept coming at us. That’s a very good baseball team over there. They are probably going to make some noise in this tournament.”

“(Bryant) did a heck of a job for them,” Pinkerton coach Stephen Campo said. “He kept us off balance all day. We finally made some adjustments and went the other way with it, as opposed to trying to yank everything to left field. We were able to put some pressure on their defensively and we got a couple breaks.”

Pinkerton senior right-hander Tom Rioux allowed two hits and struck out seven over six innings.

“(Rioux) pitched fantastic, he’s been solid all year,” Campo said. “He’s been overshadowed by Liam (Doyle) all year, but he’s just as good. I think he’s one of the top five pitchers in the state, and he came out and proved it today.”

Sam Farrington and Wesley Alfonso both had a hit for Spaulding.

“We are losing some key parts to our team who aren’t easy to replace,” Gagnon said. “It’s always tough to lose kids that you feel strongly about. Really good kids. They were fun to coach.”
