Tower of London 'Beefeater' tours resume

The tours started again as England lifted most COVID restrictions, including limits on social distancing and mask-wearing.

Visitors at the Tower of London appeared happy to be shown around once again by the iconic Beefeaters, officially called Yeoman Warders.

The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror, has been a symbol of English royal power, wealth and terror for nearly a thousand years, acting variously as a fortress, a magnificent lodging and a prison to torture and execute enemies of the state.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's 'freedom day' was marred by so-called "pingdemic chaos" as a National Health Service app alerted hundreds of thousands of people to self-isolate, including the prime minister himself.
