Paint Cadillac Ranch blue for child abuse prevention

In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, Saint Francis Ministries and the Department of Family and Protective Services welcomes the public to join them on Monday, April 3, at Cadillac Ranch starting at 11 a.m.

Guests will be provided a hot cup of coffee from Palace Coffee Co. and blue spray paint to paint the ranch blue in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Attendees are asked to also wear blue for a group photo after the painting is done.

NTHS to host lecture on eating disorders

Northwest Texas Healthcare System Behavioral Health is hosting a series of educational events for the community. The first is scheduled for 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, at the TTUHS School of Pharmacy Auditorium.

Featured speaker will be Rachel Hutto, MS, RD, LD, CNSC, Clinical Nutrition Manager at NWTHS, presenting on “Eating Disorders: Understanding the diagnostics, interventions, escalation of care and community resources.”

According to the US Department of Health & Human Services, it is estimated that over 28 million Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. Eating disorders affect Americans of all ages, racial/ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, body shapes, weights, and socioeconomic statuses. Eating disorders most often appear during the teen years or in young adults, however in recent years there has been an increase in cases among children and older adults.

Metro planning to host workshop

An Amarillo Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee Workshop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, in room 275 of the Simms Building.

The public will be permitted to offer public comments as provided by the agenda and as permitted by the presiding officer during the meeting.

Agenda items include: Discuss 2025-50 Metropolitan Transportation Plan’s Mission, Vision, and Goals; and an update on other activities from the director.

Bubba’s 33 partners with local restaurants for Special Olympics

Bubba’s 33 is teaming up with Spicy Mikes Bar-B-Q, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Pescarez and Texas Roadhouse to raise money for Special Olympics Texas. The Amarillo restaurants will donate 10% of all sales to Special Olympics on designated dates.

Dates, times and participating restaurants include:

  • Tuesday, March 21, 4-10 p.m., Texas Roadhouse, 2805 W I-40

WT Student Quartet to give on-campus recital as it prepares for NYC debut

CANYON — A West Texas A&M University student string quartet will give a free recital March 26 as it continues to raise funds for its Carnegie Hall debut.

The JAMS quartet in November won the collegiate strings category of the American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music and will perform May 27 at the Weill Recital Hall in the legendary concert house in New York City. Now, quartet members are raising $4,000 to fund their trip via a GoFundMe page and a special recital at 2 p.m. March 26 in the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex Recital Hall. Donations will be accepted.

The concert will include a lineup of favorites by Joseph Haydn, Dimitri Shostakovich, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergei Rachmaninoff and more, as well as two movements of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s String Quartet in E-flat Major. JAMS will perform the first movement of Hensel’s quartet in its Carnegie Hall concert.

Quartet members include Sydney Buckner, second violinist and senior animal science/pre-vet major from Amarillo; Josenir Cerqueira Jr., first violinist and graduate student in instrumental performance from Criciúma, Brazil; Jasmin Caldera, viola player and sophomore health science/pre-dental major from Amarillo; and Anna Ng, cello player and freshman biology major from Amarillo. The quartet was formed four years ago when Buckner, Caldera and Ng were students at Tascosa High School in Amarillo.

Sod Poodles 2023 single-game tickets on sale now

The Amarillo Sod Poodles, Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, announced that single-game tickets for the 2023 season are now available for purchase. The Hodgetown box office hours are currently Monday - Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The team store hours are currently Tuesday - Friday 10 am - 5 pm and 10 am - 3 pm on Saturdays.

The 2023 season will feature a 69-home game regular-season starting on Tuesday, April 11 against the Corpus Christi Hooks (Double-A, Houston Astros). The Sod Poodles will play eight of the other nine Texas League teams, including the Double-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Settle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, and Minnesota Twins.

Aside from the Sod Poodles official website, the only exclusive resale ticket partner for the Amarillo Sod Poodles tickets is Fan Cave Tickets.
