Back in 2017, Toyota confirmed it would be developing a new mid-engine supercar for the road, based on its—as of yesterday—three-time Le Mans-winning TS050 Hybrid LMP1 race car. Before Toyota took victory at the 24-hour endurance race Sunday, it showed off the road-going car, dubbed the GR Super Sport, on Saturday.

Despite being covered in a colorful camouflage, this is the most cohesive design of the GR Super Sport we've seen yet. Judging by the lack of body coverings, it seems the car's design is close to final. With massive haunches, a big wing, a roof scoop, a gigantic splitter, and an impossibly small cabin, it looks remarkably similar, both in size and shape, to the Le Mans-winning LMP1 car.

What we haven't seen before is the lack of a roof. The cabin of the GR Super Sport seems incredibly cramped, so having an open top probably made life easier for the two occupants during the short demonstration lap. It's not clear at this time whether there will be an open top or removable targa top variant of the car.

Toyota has yet to release any specifications or performance data for the GR Super Sport, but it's expected to use the same 2.4-liter turbocharged V-6 found in the TS050, paired to an advanced hybrid system. We've heard in the past it could be pushing upwards of 1000 horsepower, though nothing's been confirmed.

The last time we saw the GR Super Sport on the move was at last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, when Toyota President Akio Toyoda took a closed-cockpit development car for a demo lap around the Circuit de la Sarthe leading up to the endurance race. Hopefully the company will have a finished product to show off next year.
