Toys R Us returns to Augusta inside mall's Macy's department store

Toys R Us is back in Augusta.

The toy and children’s clothing chain that closed its location at 3424 Wrightsboro Rd. in 2019 has reopened a store-within-a-store in the first floor of Macy’s at Augusta Mall.

Macy’s is holding nine days of in-store events through Oct. 23 to mark the official opening of Toys R Us shops in 451 Macy’s nationwide, according to Stephanie Jimenez, corporate spokeswoman for the legacy department store chain.

Augusta’s Macy’s has set aside about 1,500 square feet for the new toy space, which is decorated with colorful accents reminiscent of the brick-and-mortar stores that Toys R Us operated worldwide until filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2017.

Hands-on demonstration tables will allow customers to interact with toys. The shops also feature a human-sized statue of Toys R Us mascot Geoffrey the giraffe, seated on a park bench to pose for selfies.

Augusta’s former Wrightsboro Road Toys R Us reopened in March 2020 as a branch of discount retailer Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.

Augusta Macy’s representatives deferred further comments on the reopening to corporate.

Augusta’s Toys R Us shop will be one of 16 in Georgia and one of just three outside the metro Atlanta area. The other store locations are Cumberland Mall, Lenox Square and Northlake Mall, all in Atlanta; North Point Mall, Alpharetta; Mall of Georgia, Buford; Peachtree Mall, Columbus; Arbor Place Mall, Douglasville; Gwinnett Place Mall, Duluth; Perimeter Mall, Dunwoody; Town Center at Cobb, Kennesaw; The Mall at Stonecrest, Lithonia; Oglethorpe Mall, Savannah; South Point Mall, McDonough; Southlake Mall, Morrow; and, Presidential Markets, Snellville.
