Track: Cleburne advances to area in six events; Spartans, Elks, Owls each have athletes advance

Apr. 14—JOSHUA — Mansfield Timberview, Midlothian and Mansfield Summit each took turns dominating most of the District 8-5A track and field championships Tuesday and Thursday at Joshua High School, but Cleburne, Burleson, Burleson Centennial and Joshua each had multiple athletes post area-qualifying finishes.

The Timberview Wolves won the girls' team district title with 115 points while Summit placed second with 111 points and Midlothian finished third with a distant 89 points.

The Midlothian Panthers and Timberview Wolves finished tied as boys' team district champions with 137 points apiece, while Summit finished third with 104 points.

The highest team finish for a Johnson County school was Burleson Centennial, as the Spartans and Lady Spartans each finished fourth in the team standings and each ended, interestingly enough, with 88 points.

Following are area-qualifiers for all four of the Johnson County schools that competed at the District 8-5A track and field meet. The District 7- and 8-5A area track and field meet is scheduled for April 21 at Joshua High School with field events beginning at 10 a.m.

Cleburne

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets placed fifth in team standings with 47 points and had five individuals advance to area in five events along with one relay team.

Leading the way for the Jackets was junior Landry Leigh, who took first place in the boys pole vault with a height of 14 feet. Leigh, who qualified for regionals a year ago, was Cleburne's lone individual district champion at this week's meet.

Cleburne junior Collin Graeve had the Jackets' next-highest finish as he claimed second place in the boys high jump with a personal-record clearance of 6 feet, 4 inches — just 2 inches behind first place.

Cleburne sophomore Parker Brown captured a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a PR time of 4:33.87.

Cleburne junior Benjamin Ludlow advances to area in two events. He placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a PR time of 4:34.38 and he also placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a PR time of 10:08.43.

Cleburne junior Jaiden Reed finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.09 seconds.

And the Jackets' 4x200 relay team of sophomore Jeremiah McGilveary, Reed, Leigh and junior Dorian Potter came in fourth at 1:30.64, edging out fifth place by 0.11 of a second.

On the girls' side, the Lady Jackets failed to qualify for area. The highest finish for any Lady Jacket was senior Lydia Guereca, who placed fifth in the discus with a personal-record throw of 101 feet, 10 inches.

Burleson Centennial

The Burleson Centennial Spartans and Lady Spartans each had strong showings at the district championships with a few first-place individual finishes.

The Spartans were led by senior Noah Martin, who swept the long-distance runs for a pair of district titles. Martin took first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:31.89 to go along with a first-place finish in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:58.34.

Joining Martin as a first-place finisher was senior Joe Haws, who took first in the discus with a PR throw of 170 feet, 8 inches.

Centennial senior Jackson Hutton claimed a pair of second-place finishes. In the 800-meter run, Hutton finished with a PR time of 1:57.48 to win silver and he also finished second in the 1,600-meter run with a PR time of 4:31.99.

Centennial sophomore JaQualan Whitaker qualified for area in two events with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter run (50.92 seconds; PR) and a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (44 feet, 0.25 inches; PR)

Also qualifying for area for the Spartans were: senior Ty Blair, third place in the 800 (1:57.88; PR); sophomore James Brown, third in the 110-meter hurdles (14.8 seconds; PR); junior Isaiah Waters, fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.93 seconds; PR); and the Spartans 4x400 relay team placed third (3:25).

Leading the way for the Lady Spartans was junior London Tucker, who took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.73 seconds and second place in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 6.75 inches.

The Lady Spartans' 4x100 relay team of freshman Micah Tucker, senior Kennedy Mosley, London Tucker and senior Kyla Ferguson took first place with a time of 46.61 seconds.

Sophomore Ella Magallan, who qualified for state last year, finished in second place in the 3,200-meter run with a season-record time of 11:42.41.

Also qualifying for are for the Lady Spartans were: freshman Micah Tucker, fourth place in the 200-meter dash (24.81 seconds; PR); senior Clara Schwind, fourth place in the 3,200-meter run (12:01.5); junior Bronwyn Adams, third in the discus (120 feet, 10 inches); Mosley, fourth in the high jump (5 feet); and the Lady Spartans' 4x200 relay team of Micah Tucker, junior Ma'Kayla Easley, Ferguson and London Tucker placed third (1:41.53).

Burleson

The Burleson Elks and Lady Elks each finished seventh in the team rankings with one first-place finish, two second-place finishes and three fourth-place finishes.

Burleson junior Ras Ford had a strong performance with a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a PR time of 21.78 seconds to claim an individual gold medal. Ford also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a PR time of 10.68 seconds.

Joining Ford as an area qualifier for the Elks is senior Julian Salyer, who placed second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:02.63.

For the Lady Elks, senior Chaise Palmer finished fourth in the 400-meter run (57.98 seconds), senior Sidney Board placed fourth in the pole vault (8 feet), and the Lady Elks' 4x400 relay team placed second at 3:58.15.

Joshua

The Joshua Lady Owls had five athletes in four events advance to area with one on the boys' side moving on.

For the Owls, sophomore Breck Walker placed third in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches to be the lone Joshua boy to move on.

For the Lady Owls, senior Marissa Bridges took first place in the girls high jump with a personal-record leap of 5 feet, 6 inches while junior Madeline Sumien won the girls pole vault with a height of 10 feet with freshman Kyndall Bethell placing second, also clearing 10 feet.

Sophomore Emma Hopkins finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 16.49 seconds and sophomore Morgan Collier placed fourth in the discus with a personal-record toss of 109 feet, 10 inches.
