Track & Field | Aurora sweeps Orange's Dale Kramer Relays for second year in a row

Aurora swept the boys and girls team championships at the Dale Kramer Relays and, in doing so, successfully defended their titles at the track & field meet hosted by Orange High School on Friday, April 29.

The Aurora girls team scored 110 points to defeat runner-up Orange, which scored 74. West Geauga and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin finished in a tie for third with 64 points each, while Solon (44), Chagrin Falls (40) and Madison (20) rounded out the field.

The Greenmen boys won the team title with 114 points, while Solon (86) was runner-up and Orange (77) was third. Other teams were Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (71) in fourth, West Geauga (52) in fifth, Chagrin Falls (16) in sixth, Madison (5) in seventh, Collinwood (4) in eighth and Richmond Heights (1) in ninth.

The Aurora girls won seven events, four races and three field events.

Seniors Alyssa Marotta and Lauren Tincher were on three winning relays, and sophomore Hannah Salgado was on two winning teams and one second-place team.

The 4x100-meter relay of senior Mia Bryant, sophomore Kassidy Fry, Marotta and Tincher won in a time of 51.86 seconds.

Salgado, Marotta, junior Hannah Rogge and Tincher won the 4x200 relay in 1:50.98.

The 4x400 relay of junior Grace Barto, Marotta, Rogge and Tincher won in 4:13.53.

Freshman Sydney Langell, senior Morgan Schmitt, sophomore Eva Logan and Barto won the 4x800 relay in 9:13.12.

The high jump relay of Fry, sophomore Kaitin Zgonc and freshman Iris Smith won with a combined height of 13 feet, 5 inches. Fry was first (4-8), Zgonc tied for second (4-6) and Smith was 7th (4-3).

Also winning was the pole vault relay of Salgado and sophomore Maggie Keys, who combined for a height of 16-0. Salgado was first overall (8-6) and Keyes was fourth (7-6).

Tincher, Trem and senior Hannah Wiencek combined to win the long jump relay with a combined distance of 44-4. Tincher was first overall (16-6), Trem was second (15-9) and Wiencek was 12th (12-1).

Three relays came in as runners-up.

The 800 sprint medley finished in 2:01.56, consisting of senior Mia Bryant, sophomores Kassidy Fry and Kaitlin Zgonc and Salgado.

The distance medley of senior Antoinette Walter, sophomore Cassidy Trem, Logan and senior Carolina Cardaman was second in 14:41.68.

Finishing second in 1:13.34 was the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay of Fry, freshman Lauren Baka, Rogge and freshman Gianna Previte.

Aurora's shot put and discus relays both placed third.

The shot put relay had a combined distance of 89-7.50. Senior Brenna Baker was 5th (33-11), freshman Felicite Williams was 10th (29-1.50) and senior Kitana Slomovitz was 12th (28-7).

Slomovitz was 3rd overall (107-10) in the discus relay, while senior Bella Hsia (89-4) was fourth and Baker (87-4) was ninth, as the Greenmen had a combined distance of 284-6.

The 4x1600 relay placed fourth in 28:18.40. Relay members were senior Juliana Malinowski, freshman Amy Kolta, senior Melanie Keller and Walter.

Boys win four events

The Aurora boys team won four events and placed second in eight more.

The 4x200 relay of seniors Ryan Kotora, Matt Studer, Aiden Henderson and Jacob Matousek won in 1:32.59.

The 4x800 relay of senior Matt Singleton, sophomore Tommy Ploskunak, senior Nate Ruehr and sophomore Robbie Will also placed first in 8:41.95.

Kotora, Matousek, Henderson and Ruehr returned in the 800 sprint medley to place first in 1:39.79.

The high jump relay of Henderson, senior Zeb Smith and junior Tyler Ertle combined for a winning height of 18-6. Henderson and Smith tied for first (6-4) and Ertle (5-10) tied for fourth.

Aurora's depth showed in its many runner-up finishes.

The 1600 relay of sophomore Robbie Will (third overall in 4:47.66) and Tommy Ploskunak (fourth overall in 4:54.75) had a combined time of 9:42.41.

The 4x100 relay of Kotora, junior Grant Thieding, Studer and Matousek finished in 45.42.

The 4x400 relay of Kotora, Singleton, junior Tyler Ertle and Henderson finished in , 3:31.37.

The 4x1600 relay of junior Porter Aardema, Singleton, freshman Zach Ploskunak and Will finished in 19:47.19.

Four field event teams were runners-up.

Pole vaulters, Junior Ben Stockdale (second overall at 11-6) and junior Ryan Kerchenski (fifth overall at 9-6) combined for 21-0.

Matousek (third overall, 19-1), senior Alex Zlocki (tied for fifth overall, 17-10), and sophomore Leo Sesuraj (tied for 10th overall, 17-1) combined for 54-0 to finish second in the long jump relay.

Sophomore Rocco Courtad, junior Max Bailey and sophomore Alex Hanff competed in the shot put and discus relays.

In the shot put, Courtad was fourth (40-3), Bailey was seventh (36-8) and Hanff tied for 15th (31-11) as they combined for a distance of 108-10.

In the discus they combined for a distance of 319-1. Bailey was fourth (134-8), Hanff was 10th (92-9) and Cortad was 11th (91-8).

The 4x110 shuttle hurdle team of senior Michael Carmosino, junior Charlie Carpenter, Smith and Sesuraj placed third in 1:09.58, and the distance medley relay of freshmen Connor Flynn and Athan Salgado, and Aardema and Zach Ploskunak placed fourth in 12:10.34.
