Track and field: Goshen's Kayla Schramm earns ninth trip to state meet

GOSHEN – Kayla Schramm’s name may not be on the tip of your tongue when discussing the great champions of Section 9 running, and that’s probably a disservice.

Schramm qualified for her ninth New York State championships on Friday – and that’s without the lost COVID opportunities in 2020 and 2021. She’s competed at cross country states four times, indoor states three times and she’s headed for her second outdoor states next week.

“I think the previous (state meet) experiences just put you in a good state of mind,’' she said. “You know how it's all going to go and where to be and when.’’

She was hoping for a personal record in the 1,500 meters on Wednesday, but it was a rather warm afternoon at her home track at Goshen and her chief rival scratched from the race. Still, Schramm won the Section 9 state qualifier in 4 minutes, 45.45 seconds to earn the Division I (large schools) berth, almost six seconds ahead of Division II qualifier Shaylen Goslar of Chapel Field.

“I think (the PR) is still to come at states,’’ said Schramm, who ran 4:39.97 at the Loucks Games three weeks ago. “I think I've been picking up, especially the past few weeks, getting my times down.’’

Frankly, Schramm is just happy to be running and competing again after two years of truncated action. She managed to compete in club meets more than a half-dozen times last spring and resumed full cross-country competition last fall – she was second at the OCIAA meet, won sectionals, was 12th at states and 27th at Federations.

“It was hard,’’ the last two years, she said. “It was a lot of training on my own. I tried to find my own meets and joined a club team but it’s a lot better now everything’s back and rolling with my team.

“I definitely missed it. I think I missed competing and everything but I don’t think I had a big setback. I still trained … I don’t know if I got better but I maintained.’’

The coaches at Boston College like what they’ve seen, and last November Schramm committed to the Eagles and competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Her mother, Tracy, ran for Penn State and got Kayla running by age 6. Kayla gave up her other sports pursuits, including gymnastics, when she got into eighth grade and her mom has been very supportive ever since.
