•The Grandview Heights boys track and field team won its second consecutive championship in the MSL-Ohio Division meet, while the Bexley girls squad captured its first title since 2018.

Both teams took a big lead into the final day May 13 at Buckeye Valley after faring well in the field events May 10.

Sydnie Smith and twin sister Ellie Smith finished first and second, respectively, in the discus and shot put for the Lions, who scored 142.5 points to outdistance Columbus School for Girls (115), Worthington Christian (96), Columbus Academy (90), Buckeye Valley (80.5), Grandview (77), Wellington (32) and Whitehall (20).

Sydnie won the discus (140 feet, 7 inches) and shot put (40-4), while Ellie threw 102-6 in the discus and 32-9 in the shot put.

“We just need to stay consistent (going into the district meet),” Sydnie Smith said. “We’re in a good place as a team right now.”

“This definitely prepared us for the warm weather (during the postseason),” Haj Abed said. “This is the first time that we have had hot weather all year. It really affected me on (May 10) because I had my three preliminary races and then the long jump. My knees were really bothered by that.”

Whitehall’s Andre Jackson won the 200 (22.99) and long jump (21-4 3/4) and was runner-up in the 100 (11.38) and 400 (49.04). Bexley’s Mason Louis won the 100 (10.83) and 400 (47.71).
