Track & Field: Grandview Heights boys, Bexley girls take home MSL-Ohio championships

•The Grandview Heights boys track and field team won its second consecutive championship in the MSL-Ohio Division meet, while the Bexley girls squad captured its first title since 2018.

Both teams took a big lead into the final day May 13 at Buckeye Valley after faring well in the field events May 10.

Sydnie Smith and twin sister Ellie Smith finished first and second, respectively, in the discus and shot put for the Lions, who scored 142.5 points to outdistance Columbus School for Girls (115), Worthington Christian (96), Columbus Academy (90), Buckeye Valley (80.5), Grandview (77), Wellington (32) and Whitehall (20).

Sydnie won the discus (140 feet, 7 inches) and shot put (40-4), while Ellie threw 102-6 in the discus and 32-9 in the shot put.

“We just need to stay consistent (going into the district meet),” Sydnie Smith said. “We’re in a good place as a team right now.”

Rylee Barno won the 800 meters (2 minutes, 23.79 seconds) and was second in the 1,600 (5:28.7) for Bexley.

Buckeye Valley’s Grace Dailey won the 100 (12.72) and 200 (26.1), and Grandview’s Madeline Palmisciano was a winner in the 1,600 (5:19.06) and 3,200 (11:52.65).

The Grandview boys (136) finished ahead of Buckeye Valley (127), Bexley (101), Whitehall (83), Worthington Christian (52), Wellington (43) and Academy (29).

Owen Billeter won the discus (145-7) and shot put (45-6) for the Bobcats, and Collin Haj Abed won the 110 hurdles (15.27) and 300 hurdles (41.14) and was runner-up in the long jump (20-10 3/4).

“This definitely prepared us for the warm weather (during the postseason),” Haj Abed said. “This is the first time that we have had hot weather all year. It really affected me on (May 10) because I had my three preliminary races and then the long jump. My knees were really bothered by that.”

Whitehall’s Andre Jackson won the 200 (22.99) and long jump (21-4 3/4) and was runner-up in the 100 (11.38) and 400 (49.04). Bexley’s Mason Louis won the 100 (10.83) and 400 (47.71).

•The Bloom-Carroll boys and Fairfield Union girls won team championships in the MSL-Buckeye meet May 13 at Logan Elm.

Dylan Chittum won the discus (143-0) and shot put (53-6 3/4) to lead Bloom-Carroll (124.5), which finished ahead of Liberty Union (118), Hamilton Township (104.5), Fairfield Union (90), Logan Elm (88), Teays Valley (79), Circleville (37) and Amanda-Clearcreek (16).

Camden Manson won the 100 (11.46) and 200 (23.14), and Liberty Union teammate Teddy Jenson won the 800 (2:03.27) and 1,600 (4:36.14).

Hamilton Township’s Nadir Langston won the 110 hurdles (15.56) and 300 hurdles (41.27).

Avery Cottrill won the 100 hurdles (16.73) and 300 hurdles (48.5) as Fairfield Union (151) outpaced Teays Valley (140), Circleville (118.5), Bloom-Carroll (78), Hamilton Township (65), Logan Elm (61), Amanda-Clearcreek (30) and Liberty Union (16.5).

Circleville’s Faith Yancey won the 100 (12.96) and 200 (26.28), and Teays Valley’s Natalie Newton was first in the long jump (16-11) and pole vault (11-6).

Hamilton Township’s Halaya Woodson won the discus (120-3) and shot put (40-4).

•The Fisher Catholic boys and girls swept the team titles in the MSL-Cardinal meet, which began May 10 and concluded May 13 at Millersport.

The boys (189.5) finished ahead of Berne Union (149), Harvest Prep (124), Fairfield Christian (74.5), Grove City Christian (37), Millersport (37), Zanesville Rosecrans (30) and Corning Miller (10).

Jack Gentile helped lead the Irish, as he won the 800 (2:05.03) and ran on the first-place 3,200 relay (8:53.36).

Harvest Prep’s Aidan Rogers won the 100 (11.37) and 200 (22.58) and was a member of the first-place 800 relay (1:35.69). He was second in the 400 (53.0), and the Warriors also won the 400 relay (46.49).

Harvest Prep’s Landon Sterling won the high jump (5-8 3/4) and long jump (19-5).

Berne Union’s Jeremy Watson won the 110 hurdles (16.91), 300 hurdles (41.64) and pole vault (13-0), and Hudson Schultz won the 1,600 (4:36.1) and 3,200 (10:22.2).

The Irish girls team finished first (146) ahead of Fairfield Christian (133), Grove City Christian (80.33), Harvest Prep (74.33), Millersport (61.33), Berne Union (54), Rosecrans (38) and Miller (24).

Fisher Catholic’s Ruby Hagy won the 400 (1:03.25) and 800 (2:31.97), and Ava Albert won the 1,600 (6:04.24) and 3,200 (13:48.64).

Fairfield Christian’s Natalee Naayers won the 100 hurdles (17.58) and 300 hurdles (49.76) and was a member of the first-place 1,600 relay (4:25.31), and Alex Wilkinson won the high jump (4-4) and pole vault (9-0).

Harvest Prep’s Myahn Smith won the 100 (13.65) and 200 (27.93) and ran on the first-place 400 relay (55.58).

Grove City Christian’s Berenice Espinosa won the shot put (31-8 1/4) and was second in the discus (89-5) behind teammate Jocelyn Rojas (99-8).
