Track and field: Naples sweeps Class 3A-District 12 meet; Pickard, Clemetson come up big

Naples cruised to a sweep at the Class 3A-District 12 track and field meet with the boys and girls dominating, but the event at South Fort Myers High School on Saturday was not without intrigue.

The boys 4x400 meter relay concluded the day, and the team of Kaleb Roth, Jason Duclona, Avery Geerlings and Kolton Pickard made some school history for Estero in a thrilling contest.

Loren Vargas Ojeda, left, of Naples High wins the 100 at the FHSAA Class 3A District-12 track and field meet at South Fort Myers High School on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Kayla Hopkins of Dunbar was second and Richcarnia Louis, foreground, was third.

The Wildcats were neck-and-neck with Dunbar and South Fort Myers in the final leg, and Pickard and the Tigers’ Joshua Dorestin broke away in the last stretch with Pickard getting the lean at the finish line to beat out his opponent by 0.18 seconds.

With the win, Estero won the district title in the 4x400 relay for the first time with a time of 3:28.39, good for a school record.

“I was really happy,” Pickard said. “So was my team. I mean, everyone was cheering, screaming, so I knew I couldn’t let anyone down, so I just tried really hard to get that last little push and lean across the line.”

Dunbar head coach Joe Addison called Estero “a tough team.”

“We knew it was going to a battle, and it’s fun,” he said. “I like that. We’ll see them again in two weeks.”

Prior to proving he was more than just a distance runner, Pickard added two more district titles to his collection with uncomplicated wins in the 800 and 1600-meter races.

Pickard is aiming to win the 1600 at states and get a top-three finish in the 800.

“I’m going to keep on pushing, keep on training hard and hopefully, my goals for the season, I accomplish them,” Pickard said.

On the girls’ side, Barron Collier sophomore Shamoya Clemetson had a banner day, capturing the district title in her best event, the long jump, as well as the 300 hurdles. She had a personal best time in that event, along with the 100 hurdles, where she came in second behind Dunbar’s Kie’niyah James. Her split in the 4x400-meter relay, where the Cougars came in third, was also a personal record.

After achieving all those striking results, Clemetson said she was tired but proud.

“It means a lot,” she said. “I’ve worked really hard throughout the whole season, so I feel really accomplished right now.”

After winning the 100 meters, Dunbar’s Tawaski Abrams looked poised to double up in the 200, but pulled up right near the finish line, falling out of the top four because of faster times in other heats.

Addison said that Abrams is nursing a quad injury and pulled up earlier than he wanted him to in the race.

“He’s young, he’s a sophomore,” Addison said. “Live and learn, and we’ll regroup and be all right.”

The Golden Eagles soared to victory with Genesis Surlin (girls triple jump), Molie Jean Baptiste (girls high jump), Luther Mogelvang (boys pole vault), Brady Clark (boys discus), Levi Mootsipaw (boys shot put), Loren Vargas Ojeda (girls 100m) and Tara Watkins (girls 800m) capturing district titles along with relay wins in the girls 4x400, girls 4x800 and boys 4x800-meter races.

Naples coach Bronze Bruland said just as important were the athletes who managed to score points for the Eagles, wherever they ended up finishing.

“The best things about track and field is it’s not always the outcome that you want, and I think our kids do a great job of trying to control the things that they can to get the outcomes that they want,” he said.
