Track and field: Willmar sends 16 to state championships

Jun. 6—ALEXANDRIA — The Willmar track and field team has advanced 16 athletes to the state Class AA championships after their performances Saturday in the Section 8AA meet.

The state Class AA meet is Friday and Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville High School. At 9 a.m. Friday, there are finals for the boys' and girls' 3,200-meter run with preliminaries in all other events except the 1,600.

Alexandria's girls and boys captured first place in the 8AA team scoring. The Alex girls had 165.75 points to beat Rocori's 130.75 and Wilmar's 85. Alex had 169.5 to beat Willmar's 142.5.

New London-Spicer's girls placed 12th with 13 points and 10th in boys with 14.5 points

The Wildcats' Danica Pederson is headed to state in the high jump after placing second with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches. NLS' Grant Hubbard advances to state in the pole vault after clearing 13-3 to also finish second.

Willmar's state advancers include:

From the girls' team:

* The 4x400 relay squad of Hannah Quinn, Nina Dawson, Erin Eilers and Lauren Eilers won with a time of 4 minutes, 3.61 seconds;

* The 4x800 relay team of Dawson, Erin Eilers, Quinn and Lauren Eilers as first in 9:37.58;

* Makenna Larson finished first in the shot put with a toss of 36-7.5.

Willmar's boys team advances the following athletes:

* William Sportel, who took first in the 300 hurdles in 41.08;

* Michael Price, Willmar, who finished first in 100 in 10.94 and first in the long jump in 21-8.5

* Colin O'Farrell, who won the 800 in 2:00.64;

* Sully Anez, who was second in the 3,200 in 9:45.18;

* The 4x100 team of Lucas Trochlil, Romero Trevino, Tanner Fleming and Price won first in :43.17;

* The 4x200 team of Jackson Sportel, Jacob Flannigan, Fleming and Trochlil finished first in 1:32.40

* The 4x400 team of Price, Trevino, Hassennadif Hassen and O'Farrell won in 3:31.50; and

* The 4x800 team of Ryan Kuhlman, Anez, Hassen and O'Farrell) placed first in 8:13.14.
