Track- Quincy girls finish Big 8 schedule unbeaten, Snellenberger sets new discus mark

nullJONESVILLE — Another Big 8 dual meet, another sweep for the Quincy Lady Orioles and another record for Quincy throwing machine Sophia Snellenberger. The Quincy girls improved to 9-2 overall on the season and finished off their Big 8 dual meet schedule unbeaten at 7-0 with the sweep, defeating the Jonesville Comets by the score of 88-48 and defeating Concord 118-17.

A big part of that sweep was Quincy’s dominance in the field events, paced by junior throwing ace Sophia Snellenberger. For the third time this season Snellenberger broke the QHS school record in the discus, this time besting her own mark by two feet, winning the event with a new record throw of 143 feet, 8 inches. Snellenberger also won the shot put in a sweep of the throwing events, winning with a throw of 37 feet, 2.5 inches.

Overall Quincy’s winning effort was bolstered by 11 wins in the 17 events competed in, including a sweep of the hurdle events, wins in three of the four relays, and a win in four of the five field events.

Helping in Quincy’s dominance of the field events was senior Flo Vito who won the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet, 0 inches while freshman Abby Tinervia won the long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 4.25 inches.

Quincy also took the top two spots in both throwing events and the top three positions in the discus for big points. In addition to Snellenberger’s sweep, Quincy junior Raigan Horsfall took second place in both events, showcasing a dangerous 1-2 punch for the Oriole throwers. Horsfall took second place in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, 2 inches and second place in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 0 inches. Emlyeigh Burlew also took third place in the discus for the 1-2-3 sweep of the event for Quincy.

In the running events Quincy was paced by a handful of wins, led by Nikkia Cronk who took first place in the 100 meter dash in a season best time of 13.43 seconds.

Also taking wins for Quincy was Elise Wright with a win in the 3200 with a time of 14 minutes, 1.92 seconds; Teagan Payne with a win in the 100 hurdles in a time of 20.34 seconds; Lita Fulton with a first place finish in the 300 hurdles in a time of 54.25 seconds; the 400 relay team of Brooke Wasikowski, Nikkia Cronk, Flo Vito and Abby Tinervia, first place in a time of 54.02 seconds; the 800 relay team of Lita Fulton, Raylee Fulton, Wasikowski, and Ella Dunn, first place in a time of 2 minutes, 0.43 seconds; and the 3200 relay team of Mollie Butchart, Charlotte Crabbs, Elise Wright and Sadie Miller, first place in a time of 15 minutes, 13.44 seconds.

Rounding out the Quincy winning effort with a top four finish in their respective event was Abby Tinervia, third place in the 100; Brooke Wasikowski, third place in the 400; Raylee Fulton, fourth place in the 400; Sadie Miller, third place in the 800; Mollie Butchart, fourth place in the 800; Charlotte Crabbs, third place in the 1600 and second place in the 3200; Elise Wright, fourth place in the 1600; Coelie Smullen, second place in the 100 hurdles, fourth place in the 300 hurdles and fourth place in the high jump; Brook McVicker, fourth place in the 100 hurdles; Teagan Payne, second place in the 300 hurdles; Lorelei Kugler, third place in the 300 hurdles.; the 800 relay team of Coelie Smullen, Lorelai Kugler, Brook McVicker, and Cheyenne Marske, third place; the 1600 relay team of McVicker, Marske, Tinervia and Vito, second place; the 1600 relay team of Raylee Fulton, Lita Fulton, Brooke Wasikowski and Teagan Payne, third place; Emlyeigh Burlew, fourth place in the shot put; Nikkia Cronk, second place in the high jump; Ella Dunn, third place in the high jump; Alison Turner, third place in the pole vault; and Brook McVicker, fourth place in the pole vault.

In the other girls dual it was Jonesville defeating Concord 87-28.

On the boys side of double dual meet it was Concord coming out on top, finishing 2-0 after defeating Quincy 85-51 and downing Jonesville 75-62. Quincy dropped their match up with Jonesville as well, falling by the score of 87-49.

The Quincy effort was paced by three event winners, led by senior Tae’Sean Bodley who took first place in the 300 hurdles in a time of 43.70 seconds. Bodley also finished in second place in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 6 inches, fourth place in the 100 in a time of 12.15 seconds, and third place as a part of the 400 relay team along with teammates Bryce Bellamy, Michael Daniels and Ethan Hollister in a time of 47.50 seconds.

Junior big man Ashtyn Morris also brought home a win, taking first place in the discus with a throw of 127 feet, 0 inches while also notching a third place finish in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 9 inches.

Quincy also had a big night in the pole vault as the Orioles took the top three spots in the event. The trio of Corey Turner, Jachin Murray and Kaleb Handy all cleared the height of 9 feet, 6 inches, with Turner taking first place as he cleared the height in fewer attempts. Murray finished in second while Handy finished in third.

Rounding out the Quincy effort with a top four finish in their respective event was Cameron Barry, fourth place in the 200; Landen Kelley, fourth place in the 800; Nathan Richer, fourth place in the 3200; the 800 relay team of Landen Kelley, Ethan Hollister, Cameron Barry and Michael Daniels, third place; the 1600 relay team of Kelley, Gabe Watson, Barry and Noah Pearson, second place; Zach Gray, fourth place in the shot put; Gabe Watson, second place in the discus; Zach Klimmer, fourth place in the high jump; Jachin Murray, third place in the long jump; and Ethan Hollister, fourth place in the long jump.

The Quincy Track and Field program will next see action Friday when they travel to the Constantine Invitational as they prepare for the MHSAA Regional Tournament on May 20.
