Tracking COVID-19 in Mississippi: 694 new coronavirus cases reported Friday

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 694 new coronavirus cases Friday, fueled by the highly contagious delta variant.

On Friday, the state reported five new coronavirus-related deaths which occurred between Nov. 4 and Wednesday, according to health department records and death certificate reports.

Since the virus hit the state in March 2020, a total of 508,469 COVID-19 cases and 10,187 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.

The health department on Friday reported 22 outbreaks at Mississippi long-term care facilities. There have been 11,328 cases of coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 2,099 deaths.

According to a New York Times database, at least 722 new coronavirus deaths and 64,601 new cases were reported in the U.S. on Thursday, although the data had an anomaly as many states did not report data on Veterans Day. During the past week, there has been an average of 74,128 cases per day, an increase of 2%.

Residents between the ages of 25 and 39 represent the largest portion of the infected population in the state with 114,923 cases.

Among patients under 18, children between the ages of 11 and 17 have the highest infection rate, with 47,863 cases identified. The 65 and older age group has the highest total number of deaths with 7,071 reported.

According to health department data, at least 1,570,778 people have started the vaccination process in Mississippi as of Friday morning. Since December, about 1,391,702 people have been fully immunized against COVID-19. At least 200,498 have received a booster dose or a third dose of Pfizer or Moderna.

Approximately 493,096 people are presumed recovered from the virus as of Monday, according to the health department's website.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Harrison County numbers have steadily climbed, with the county reporting the highest number of cases at 34,641; DeSoto County follows with 32,746, then Hinds County with 32,355 cases. Jackson County is reporting 24,726 cases and Rankin County has 22,322 total cases.
