Pinecrest: Trader Joe’s opened its first South Florida store 10 years ago in a former Borders book shop on Southwest 92nd Street and South Dixie Highway. At the time, it was the company’s fifth location in the state. Trader Joe’s picked Pinecrest because of all the “foodies” in the surrounding area.

Miami Beach: The market opened a Miami Beach on West Avenue in 2019.

Coral Gables: The company opened a third Miami-Dade County store in 2021 on South Dixie Highway in the Gables. This one has a garage and came without the parking headaches a bit south in Pinecrest.

Midtown: The newest Trader Joe’s in Miami-Dade opened up in the Midtown Miami area in 2022, serving the Wynwood, Allapattah and MiMo areas as well.

Time/date/place: The three-day hiring fair for the newest Florida store in Manatee County, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, through Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 8111 Cooper Creek Blvd. The store, which is not yet open, is in The Shoppes at University Town Center near Bradenton.

Online applications: Candidates unable to attend the hiring fair can also apply online at traderjoes.com/careers. Starting pay is listed at $16 to $18 per hour.

Quote: “We are getting closer to being able to announce an opening date and I will let you know as soon as we do. The store is still not quite photo ready. However, we are looking to hire 40-plus local crew members,” the company said by email. Trader Joe’s confirmed to the Bradenton Herald in May that it planned to open the store north of University Parkway and west of Interstate 75 by the end of the year.

Trader Joe’s history

It all started in California in the 1960s. And 45 years later, it came to Florida:

What devoted shoppers love about Trader Joe’s

Cheap wine and lots of snacks and frozen entrees:

The selection: From a Miami Herald story before the Miami Beach location opening in 2019: “Trader Joe’s has long been a hit with grocery shoppers for its fresh produce and house-brand items, from Cookie Butter spread to its Charles Shaw wine, nicknamed Two-Buck Chuck for its original $1.99 price tag in California. First-time Trader Joe’s shoppers are often surprised to find shelves stocked with about 80 percent of products with an in-house label. That helps keep prices low to compete with larger chain grocery stores. Many of the products feature no artificial coloring, flavoring or preservatives, although Trader Joe’s doesn’t bill itself as a health food store.”
