Trader Joes to open larger Back Bay store, says new report

Trader Joe’s is looking to add a location in Boston’s Back Bay, according to a new report from the Boston Business Journal.

Although Trader Joe’s already has a small location at 899 Boylston Street, the report says the grocery chain is working to open a 16,500-square-foot store half a mile down the road at 500 Boylston Street.

The BBJ reports that a Trader Joe’s spokesperson says the company has “no plans” to close its existing store, but is simply “exploring locations in the area.”

Trader Joe’s won the Boston Licensing Board’s approval to sell alcohol at the new location and submitted a permit this week for plumbing work.

The new location would share a 712,000-square-foot mixed-use complex with other installments like Soulcycle and Juice Press. Much of the ground-floor space is currently vacant, says BBJ.

The paperwork submitted to the Licensing Board says the store would close at 9:00 p.m.

Outside from any current or new additions to the Bolyston area, Trader Joes has two other locations in Boston, one in Allston and the other in the Seaport.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
