Traffic accidents take deadly toll on South Jersey highways

FRANKLIN - A 94-year-old motorist has died after a two-vehicle crash here.

John Haynicz, a lifelong resident of Elk, was conscious and alert after the accident on Delsea Drive near Paul Street around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 25, police said. He died later in a hospital.

The crash in the Franklinville section was one of at least four fatal collisions in South Jersey in recent days.

Haynicz lived most of his life in Elk Township, where he grew up on a family farm before serving in the U.S. Army in Germany, according to an obituary.

A life member of Aura Fire Co, he served on Elk’s township committee from 1965 to 1974 and the school board from 1959 to 1971, an obituary says.

He also worked for 29 years as an electrician and electrical supervisor at DuPont Co. in Deepwater, it adds.

An avid hunter in his younger years, Haynicz “continued his love of farming by maintaining a large garden and making his famous ‘Poppop's pickles,’" the obituary notes.

A 90-year-old passenger in Haynicz' pickup truck was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries to her foot, as well as lacerations, .

The other driver, a 34-year-old Sewell man, was taken to a hospital with suspected head injuries.

Fatal accidents in Lumberton, Camden and Cherry Hill

In other incidents, Lumberton police are investigating the death of a bicyclist who was struck by a vehicle on Route 38.

Jason Taylor, 42, of Mount Holly died shortly after the Aug. 22 accident, which occurred around 6:40 p.m. on the westbound highway at the Route 541 Bypass.

The driver remained at the scene, police said.

A Camden man was fatally injured Aug. 24 when his car hit multiple trees at 36th Street and River Road in East Camden, according to Camden County police.

Juan Carlos DeJesus, 22, died shortly after the 3 a.m. crash, police said.

And Cherry Hill police say a motorist died when a vehicle swerved across a construction zone into oncoming traffic on Route 70, police say.

The accident happened around 9:50 a.m. Aug. 29 on the westbound highway near Frontage Road, according to a police account.

The motorist who lost control struck two vehicles in the eastbound lane, causing non-fatal injuries to their drivers.

"It is unknown if the driver suffered a medical emergency" before losing control of the vehicle, police said.

Additional details, including the victim's name, were not available due to an ongoing investigation.

A fatal accident also occurred on Aug. 22 on Route 70 in Medford, police said.
