Traffic alert: Lanes open after wrong-way crash on Florida’s Turnpike near Hard Rock Stadium

A head-on crash shut down Florida’s Turnpike near Hard Rock Stadium for hours early Friday morning. Lanes reopened before 9 a.m. at the tail end of rush hour.

Here what to know so far:

What happened: According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a white Chevrolet Camaro was heading north in the southbound lanes before dawn near Northwest 199th Street. The Camaro crashed head-on with a silver Toyota pickup truck heading south with the correct flow of traffic.

Rescue on the road:

The man driving the Camaro was taken by helicopter ambulance to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, said FHP Lt. Alejandro Camacho.

The person driving the Toyota had minor injuries, Camacho said in an email to the Miami Herald.

The turnpike was temporarily shut down so the helicopter could land, but has since reopened, he said.

Shutdown: Southbound lanes at Northwest 199th Street near Hard Rock Stadium were shut down for several hours. Northbound lanes were also closed at times for rescue crews for an air ambulance to land. All lanes have reopened, Camacho said.

Areas affected:

Traffic heading south to the nearby Golden Glades Interchange and also downtown Miami.

Traffic heading north to Broward.
