Hit-and-run driver in fatal Broward turnpike crash ran away with a baby, troopers say
A child was killed and two people were injured in an early morning hit-and-run crash Wednesday on Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County, troopers said.
The hit-and-run driver reportedly ran away while carrying a baby, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The crash of the Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz happened just before 12:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the turnpike near Griffin Road, according to FHP.
Here’s what troopers know so far:
A 2015 black Volkswagen Passat with a child and two adults inside was stopped in the inside northbound turnpike lane, just north of Griffin Road, with its lights off. Their car was rear-ended by a driver in a blue 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE car.
The force of the crash sent the Volkswagen spinning into the outside guardrail along the outside shoulder. Once the Mercedes-Benz came to a stop, the driver ran away with a baby, troopers said. Investigators believe the man is between 20-25 years old and is about 5’5.
The two adults in the Volkswagen — a 37-year-old woman from Plantation and a man — were taken with “incapacitating injuries” to Broward Health Medical Center by Davie Fire Rescue, troopers said. The child, a girl, in the car died.
Anyone with information that can help investigators should call police.
