New traffic pattern and parking restriction starting next week in Columbus. Details here

If you drive in downtown Columbus, you will encounter a new traffic pattern and parking restriction starting next week.

Beginning on Jan. 29, construction of the new Columbus Judicial Center will cause the following changes for vehicles around the Columbus Government Center, announced by the Columbus Consolidated Government:

  • Parking spaces next to the Government Center wings on First Avenue, Second Avenue and 10th Street won’t be available because they will be enclosed by a barrier and become part of the construction site.

  • The section of First Avenue next to the Government Center, between 9th Street and 10th Street, will be converted to a one-way street for only southbound vehicles.

  • The section of Second Avenue next to the Government Center, between 9th Street and 10th Street, will be converted to a one-way street for only northbound vehicles.

Construction of the Judicial Center is expected to be completed in 2027.

The project has a construction budget of $192.5 million for the 342,000-square-foot, eight-story facility. But the project’s total cost (construction, design, furniture, fixtures and equipment) is estimated at $207.5 million, CCG Building Inspections and Code Enforcement Department told the Ledger-Enquirer. This includes the $200 million from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax voters approved in 2021 and $7.5 million approved by Columbus Council from the city’s reserve funds.

The construction contractor is Gilbane Building Company of Atlanta in partnership with Freeman and Associates of Columbus. The architect is S/L/A/M Collaborative of Atlanta in partnership with Barnes Gibson of Columbus.
